Mormons anticipating marriage discrimination lawsuits?

Is change coming to Mormon temple wedding policy?

Dehlin writes on his Facebook page that he has heard that "this change is primarily motivated out of a desire to help the church avoid discrimination-based litigation once same-sex marriage is allowed in all 50 states."
By separating "civil ceremonies from the temple ceremonies (ahead of time)," Dehlin writes, "apparently the church feels like it will avoid discrimination lawsuits down the road."

They must be irrational for believing the government would interfere in church marriages because they never have before.

Not too long ago, the government never allowed gay marriages, but things change.

The government has never forced any church to perform any marriage it objected to, and there is no reason to think it will start to do so. Catholics churches are not and never have been required to wed divorced people. No church was ever forced to perform an interracial marriage. Etc.

Maybe not with marriage, but with other things.

It is happening in England after legislation was changed, but it will never happen in America. America is different since we don't have a Church of America.

London, England, Aug 3, 2013 / 06:03 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Following legislation that permits same-sex marriage in the U.K. yet prohibits the Church of England from performing the ceremony, a gay couple are planning to sue to be able to marry in their church.

Homosexual Mormons would never think of suing their own church over marriage discrimination either. Not to worry.

I am a proponent of same-sex marriage, but I have no issue with any church refusing to perform a ceremony.

Um, bring on the lawsuits? If someone is really that gung-ho to sue the church, I hope they have deep pockets. Like, Grand Canyon deep. I also hope they have a sense of humor because the chances of them winning is laughable, at the very least.

As for PearlWatson and her incessant trolling of the GD... It's boring.

Thank you for admitting that marriage was not a concern.

The key distinction in the "other things" is private vs. public. When a church performs things just for its own membership, it can discriminate freely. When it provides its services to the general public, it has to behave civilly.

Government forcing churches to pay for contraception/abortion pill? That's different. The government had to prevent the revolting war on women.

Churches don't have to go into public businesses if they don't want to. When you hire and serve the public, you play by public rules.

She's been unable to make any case that there is any sort of threat at all, so she seems to be engaging in sarcastic agreement. It does get old after a while.

People are allowed to hold completely irrational fears, and in the USA, we're allowed to say they are completely irrational. Everyone wins!

Lots of freedoms are more limited in England (speech, press, gun ownership, etc.).

Yeah, in America homosexuals can own guns, and talk about their bedroom behavior all over the media so they won't want to sue their church for marriage discrimination. Not to worry.

Yeah, you churches don't need to be in the hospital, education, adoption, publishing, online dating, and wedding services businesses. Homosexuals will leave you alone when you keep your churchy behavior in your churches.

Everyone wins!

Yeah, LDS adoption agencies can't discriminate against homosexual couples any longer once homosexuals get their legislation through, and BYU can't keep them out of their housing. Everyone wins!

Let's celebrate diversity, guys!

Both of those things would be positive.
