Both would get picked up by contending teams. Both would benefit more from playing meaningful games that would help contending teams see their value as an FA acquisition next year and/or resign with the teams who pick them up. And on the flip side, of course, we get young players more time and help the tank.
RJeff: The only reason you don't do this is if you call around the league and none of the contenders would pick him up. You don't embarrass a guy, so he doesn't get bought out if that's the case.
Marvin: The only reason floated for not doing this is his laughable "bird rights", or even more laughable value in a sign and trade. I'd be shocked if got a 3 year deal from anybody, not to mention he's not even an MLE player. We certainly don't need to maintain an inside track to sign him.
Philly is buying out Granger, Orlando bought out Big Baby, why wouldn't we do the same thing? It can easily be spun as helping the vets, and it helps us.
