I don't know if it is any new thread worthy but I did a little play by play analysis for the first three quarters when the core5 where together on the court. I'm not the biggest X's and O's guy so if I have mistakes please tell me ya'll so I can improve that part of my understanding of ball. Most of us had fun tonight and enjoyed the 4th quarter but I also hope that everybody saw that we got killed when they where on the court for the first three quarters. So I wanted to see what the reasons are because it looked stunning(that might be a little over board) in the 4th. So here it comes.
1st Quarter: 3:28 - 1:47 , 0 - 6 , -6:
1st DPOS:
- Gordon fouled George and we were over the limit. 2/2 from the line (2 PTS)
1st OPOS:
- Derrick got fouled on the block
- after the inbound Derrick fouled Mahinmi while he tried to get position on the block
2nd DPOS:
- George is on the right wing guarded by Alec
- West is setting a pick. Either Alec played ice or George just thought I just use all the space I got at the right side
- Enes dropped a little inside like we usually defend the PnR
- At first George wanted to go into the lane but Alec went with him towards the lane so George went baseline and took a fadeaway J. Which he made (2PTS)
- That was a tough shot so one might think that it was good D but Alec should not leave West at this possession. You never help one pass away that is the job of the weakside aka Derrick! Also that was bad offense from George. He should have kicked it out to West for an spot up J.
2nd OPOS:
- really bad offense, no off ball movement after the 3rd pass or so
- left wing PnR from Alec and Derrick
- Watson is playing the passing lane and the ball is loose, I feel like Trey had a chance to get the ball(it was a 50/50 ball) but he did not hustle and the Pacers grabbed the ball
- STL Indiana
3rd DPOS:
- the guy who disrupted Derrick immediately ran down the court because he kinda knew that they get the ball and he made the easy layup (2PTS)
3rd OPOS:
- wow...no off ball movement what so ever
- right wing PnR from Gordon and Enes
- West is defending the PnR exactly as we are but Gordon can't blow by West because Alec is at the strong side corner, Trey is at the top of the key and Derrick is at the weakside block.
- Gordon can't really go nowhere and Enes's lazy *** still did not roll
- when Enes rolled to the high post, Gordon passed and Enes should actually pop bu he decided to take a dribble and attack the basket
- West and George got their hands on the ball and it was a minor miracle that he still had the ball right at the rim
- he pump fakes, than pivits(to not get blocked from West, actually good call and shows some development) and wants to do a reverse layup but gets stuffed!
- and here is the thing, Derrick is still at the weakside block and all by himself because Mahinmi was getting up to block that shot if Enes sees Derrick wide open Derrick is eiher doin a little floater or puts Mahinmi on a poster.
3rd Quarter: 6:05 - 3:09 , 5 - 13 , -8:
1st OPOS:
- no off ball movement!
- left wing PnP from Trey and Enes but this time the left side is all cleared out. Alec, Gordon and Derrick are all on he weakside and Enes has the wide open pop and makes it (2PTS)
1st DPOS:
- West has the ball at the top of the key, passes the ball to the right wing and goes to the left high post to set an screen for George who curls to the basket.
- Enes is a couple of feet in the paint in case George gets the seperation
- after the pick West steps a back a little and gets the pass from Stephenson who was at the left wing
- for whatever reason Enes does not step up, like West could blow by him or so and gives him enough space to take a mid range J (2 PTS)
- bad D!
2nd OPOS:
- now that's a play we run quite often
- Trey has the ball at the left wing, Enes is at the left high post, Derrick and Alec are at the weakside block and Gordon is at the top of the key
- Enes goes to the the weakside block, Alec goes to the weakside corner, Gordon goes to the weakside wing and Derrick goes to set a ball screen
- Trey does not use the screen, so he goes in the direction towards the basket and makes a bounce pass to the now cutting/rolling Derrick
- George does the same thing Alec did earlier and helps one pass away, Derrick sees that and makes the pass to Gordon, who misses the shot from downtown
- that was a really good read from Derick but I feel like Enes was also open at the weakside block(maybe it's just me doe) but I guess we're not there yet where the bigs can make that pass through the lane with confidence
2nd DPOS:
- Stephenson has the ball at the righ wing, West is at the top of the key, Watson sets a down screen for George at the weakside
- Watson then moves to the strongside corner and West steps in to the elbow
- Gordon thought George will run a curl like he did earlier but this time he steps behind the three point line, gets the pass and runs left by Gordon
- Enes was not in position so George would run straight to the basket but Trey kinda smell the play and was there to meet George
- now Gordon, Trey and Enes were around him and George tries to make a bounce pass to West through Enes and Gordon, Gordon gets a hand on it and Alec who was guarding the left wing picked the ball up
- Alec makes an outlet pass to Gordon but Stephenson intercepts it, whicht turns to a wide open three pointer (3 PTS)
- that was a 5 point swing but nonetheless I think that was some great D by Trey!
3rd OPOS:
- out of the 1-4 set Enes goes high to set a pick and gets called for a moving screen
3rd DPOS:
- Stephenson and West run a high PnR
- Enes meets Stephenson at the FT line, dropps back to the rim and uses the verticality rule and Stephenson misses the shot(Enes is now behind the baseline)
- the ball comes down on the other side of the rim, Alec tries to get the board but Stephenson gets his own rebound
- Derrick bothers his putback attempt(Enes is now on the court again and should actually be on Dericks guy), the ball comes down on the other side again and Mahinmi gets the OREB
- Derrick is still trieng to block the shot, fouls Mahinmi AND1 (3PTS)
4th OPOS:
- Trey has the ball at the left wing, Gordon sets a down screen under the basket to free up Derrick at the left block but Trey throws an entry pass directly out of bounds (one of the worst of this season)
- TO AGAIN
4th DPOS:
- Stephenson has the ball at the right wing, Watson is at the opposite wing and West is at the weakside block
- Stephenson crossesover Alec and turn on the jets towards the rim
- Derrick takes a couple of steps in the middle
- West steps up to set an off-ball screen for Watson who goes to the corner, Trey looses him, stephenson makes a nice bounce pass to Watson in the corner, who hits a three (3 PTS)
- Bad D!
5th OPOS:
- Gordon and Enes are playing a PnR on the left wing but Gordon does not pass to Enes instead passses to Derrick who got beautiful position under the rim
- Derrick tries to lay it in but gets fouled. 1/2 from the line (1 PT)
5th DPOS:
- Gordon is guarding George at the left block, Derrick is guarding West at the FT line, Alec is guarding Stephenson at the right wing, Enes is guarding Scole at the weakside block and Trey is guarding Watson at the weakside corner
- Derrick is going over to double George which leaves West open at the FT line, Alec rotates over
- Stephenson cuts into the lane and drags Derrick with him to the right block
- West pushes Alec to the basket and lays it in (2 PTS)
- Derrick should never had left West(same as Alec earlier, don't help one pass away), Enes should be the one who provides help D from the weakside, at least Derrick should communicate with Alec and stay play he passing ane or something
6th OPOS:
- Hayward gets a screen from Derrick twice to get a little seperation
- hits a pull up jumper from 15 swish (2pts)
After rewatching the game tape I feel like they didn't do that bad like the result possibly indicates. They did some stupid TOs and every one of them had a defensive mistake but from a basketball IQ and team chemistry standpoint I didn't see much big lapses. There was that one pass from Enes that he should have made, the same play where we overload the strongside, that one pass from Derrick where he could have passed it to Enes(???not even sure on this one) and that one entry pass from Trey but seriously I feel like beside that passing(even they should at least get average vision with their talent) from our big men that those things are fixabele. Now I hope this lineup will get a chance to play together for at least 10 MIN a game from now on, so they can work on those little things in actual games and build some more chemistry.
I hope it wasn't to long.
