What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

I wouldn't worry about that. They've put the Godfather theme on the back in one of his interviews.
I visited Sicily before...there is a town called Corleone of which the fictional Godfather character was named after, there's also a Sicilian town called Messina. Hmmmm....

So somebody explain the timeline we're working with here. I'm not that familiar with how the coaching search operates because the Jazz have had stability. The Jazz can interview people right now, correct? Is there any "dead" period where contracts can't be offered so that teams actually have time to look at guys or is just one big free for all where you better interview and offer the guys you want ASAP or else some other team will jump on them?

I have been watching Euro BB for the last 25 years ( I live in Israel. Our clubs play in the Euroleauge , our national team in the EuroBasket) I am also a NBA and Jazz fan for as much years. I watched about 80 Jazz games this year and many others. In my opinion , the NBA is superior to Euro BB in all but one aspect - coaching. I mean, of course there are brilliant minds in NBA coaching field but here coaching can really win games. Because in many ways the team basketball, plays, spacing etc. make up for the lack of super-mega talent or athletisem (which are being 'stolen' by NBA teams...
Watching game plans of Eurobasket higher levels is sometime like chess match between the coaches.
Anyway, my point is that I will absolutely love seeing a Euro coach on the Jazz bench. Messine is genius but Blatt is even better. He is American born, played in the NCAA and have the Euro experience alongside great understanding of US players and system.
So in conclusion I honestly think that those of us who miss true 'Jazz basketball' - many assists, tons of picks, slashing and cutting, layered team plays - A.K.A a team system , should really support bringing in Messina or even better - Blatt
IMHO.
Anyway I hope we are heading into a new and better era of coaching with today's news.

Nice post, thanks.

I would like Messine, but I fear the lakers. Unexplainably have not fired dAntoni yet, but they will. And they need to make a big splash with their hire to compete with Doc Rivers hire at the Clippers and Phil Jackson at the Knicks. They are not going to hire the likes of Boylen, they need a hire with flair...Messine would give them that.

Here is his resume:

Coached under:

Jed Heathcote
Rudy Tomjonavic
Tom Izzo
Rick Carlisle
Greg Popovic

He helped develop Hakeem and Yao Ming.

I don't think he is a future hall of famer, you take the Utah portion out of his resume, he looks just as good as Longabardi and other assistant coaches.

Now, I'm not saying I want him. I don't. I'm just saying we can't praise Lindsey in one breath, then rip the Boylen hire in another. Boylen has a good resume and Lindsey has done a good job with his moves so far.

ALL of that being said, I think this is nothing more than a publicity move, so when the announce the real hire, it will be met with lots of praise, because, heck, it wasn't Boylen, right?

Why can't you? We can praise DL but it still doesn't make him perfect. He has made a lot of sweet and smart moves but he also brought in JLucasIII and kept Ty as the coach. Yes you could say it helped our tank but in reality no GM is perfect. I will give DL the benefit of the doubt until he really messes up but I am not that excited about Boylen. I think right now everyone is just speculating what DL is going to do and the only thing I am sure about right now is that DL will go through all his candidates and then make a decision. I hold the right to criticize it and not like it. On the other hand, I could also end up being wrong too.

I had to look it up, David Blatt played for Princeton, so I am assuming he would bring the Princeton offense to he Jazz. I wonder if he wants to coach in the NBA.

I am completely uninformed when it comes to who would be a good coach. So I have tried to avoid jumpin on to many bandwagons as it would be uninfomred.

Having said that, Messina's resume is VERY impressive.

In what way is Messina a big splash? Just kind of from the viewpoint that he is a risk? Because he coached there already obviously and isn't a big 'name' guy. I think it would be smart, but they've got 10 other guys that would make a bigger splash that they could hire.

This quote from DL sounded like it described Messina.

Lindsey listed several characteristics a new coach should have, including “personal character, work ethic, a competitive DNA, strategic coaching acumen, and ability to think on one’s feet.’’

So how would he describe, if he wanted to employ Ty?
