BYU NCAA Violations

I could not be more stunned at the apparent violations the BYU football program has committed. There is not much information available yet, but it sure looks like major trouble. No school in the country is in a more precarious position when it comes to something like this. Not only does it look incredibly hypocritical, but their decision to play as an independent has put them on shaky ground, anyway. If Bronco knew (and it's difficult to believe he didn't), he will be gone. Could this take down the entire program? The church is not going to like finding themselves in such an embarrassing position.

The BYU Trojans

Yikes, I would have expected this to happen at that school up north. But BYU?

BYU under investigation for violating NCAA rules for 15+ years. Free iPads, housing, etc...

BYU...Possibly cheating? Spirit, Honor, and Tradition indeed. If only the schools were playing this year. I guess when you don't live right off the field, someone pays your rent for you. Show us the magic, Bronco!

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
NCAA is on very shaky ground themselves and may not have the time nor interest to investigate.

Sounds like absolutely nothing burger. Just media hyping something that's already been taken care of.

We'll see how widespread it was. Right now all we've got is a quote from Hoffmann saying that he didn't get anything. However, it sounds like Duane Busby was fired because of this, so presumably some other players did. I really doubt Bronco was in the know.

The quotes below are from the Tribune's article:
A former BYU player whose last season was in 2012 told The Tribune that Busby’s generosity "was something everybody on the team knew about" but that the middle-aged bachelor generally focused on high-profile, offensive skill position players.

"Every year, he had his little buddies that he would kind of pal around with," said the former player, who requested anonymity. "Every year, a handful of guys gravitated to him."
A few, such as the aforementioned, said it was "common knowledge" that some players received special treatment in regards to cheaper housing, but declined to offer additional details.

When Busby stepped down in March and a school news release said he was "retiring from BYU and college athletics to pursue other interests," Mendenhall expressed disappointment that his staff was losing a key member.

"You don’t replace him," Mendenhall said at the time. "He is a personal friend, trusted advisor [and] essential to our success over the last nine years. … Duane is understated, so he asked me specifically not to make a big deal about it. So that’s as big [of] a deal as I can make it. But I will miss him."
You seriously believe that Bronco probably wasn't aware. Are you saying that he's out of touch?

If Mendenhall knew, he should face consequences. If anyone else knew, they should as well. NCAA needs to ban BYU from playing in any championship bowls for 5 years. ;)

Seriously, BYU is suffering consequences of their own greed. They went the way of the independent, signing their own TV deal, when every indication was that Super Conferences were forming. Now, with the Big Five muscling them out, Cougars finding themselves marginalized.

^this is coming from a guy that prolly knows lots about loopholes and the limits of NCAA's investigative tendencies ATM. So, yeah, I guess it will be interesting.

Believe bronco was not aware of what exactly?

I have not heard anyone be convicted of any wrong doing

OMG. I think it is blatantly obvious to everyone (except apparently you and maybe Bronco) what Bronco should have been aware of.

I actually havent really read anything or heard anything.

Im genuinely asking you a question (that you seem to not be able, or want to, answer).

What exactly happened?

i heard about 30 seconds on sports talk radio about hoffman maybe getting cheap rent or something?

(p.s. you dont need to be rude)

Duane Busby, who retired in March as BYU's director of football operations, is being accused of providing things like electronics and reduced rent to football players. Things that the NCAA frowns upon. The strange thing to me is that it strikes me as weird that someone who has an official position with the school would be involved. When you hear about college athletes getting benefits the NCAA doesn't allow, isn't it usually from agents or boosters?

I know this sounds cynical but..... are there programs that dont do minor violations like what you mentioned?

Also, the dude doesnt even work for them anymore? Sounds like byu already took care of it maybe.
