Sloan not mentioned in the award watch at ESPN.com

The more egregious problem in that awards watch is Chris Paul being No. 4 in the Defensive Player of the Year discussion. It represents one of the most bafflingly persistent misconceptions in sports - that Paul is an elite defender simply because he gets a lot of steals. No one can take the steals away from him, but he's not a great defender and never has been. Actually try watching basketball, "Dave McMenamin" - you might notice how often Paul is a defensive liability.

He's been lingering around fifth most of the year in the watch. A 20-9 record for a team that was billed as good but not great isn't going to win the COY.

If Sloan didn't win COY by now he never will.

The only possible exception might be if announces his last season in advance. And I doubt that is Sloan's style. He'll probably announce his retirement during the offseason or at the end of the regular season.

Or go out like Frank Layden did.

That's because you have to be some new up-and-comer with a mediocre team record, or a coach with a crappy team making more of them than people think they should. He will never win it, though he is just as deserving as any other candidate in any given year, including this year. The other part I find laughable is those who vote for the award always decrying the fact that he has never won it, but then their voting record doesn't match their outrage or feigned indignation.
