Will Spurs Match Max Offers For Kawhi Leonard?

He's a restricted free agent next year and seeing the max offers for Hayward and Parsons, I bet even if he just keeps what he's been doing he will get max or near-max offers too. The Spurs however don't like max contracts much, because I read somewhere that Duncan is the only player who got max contract in the near history of the Spurs.

So, the question is valid, would Spurs match a max or near-max offer for Kawhi? Or are they confident that he would prefer stay with them for less? Btw, don't forget that Spurs might go into a declining period so Kawhi might like more dough over staying with a probably regressing team.

And, the more important question is, could the Jazz be one of the bidders?

The Spurs match. I'd still give him a max offer laden with stipulations on day 1 of free agency though, no questions asked.

If the Jazz let Hayward walk and don;t lock the $ up elsewhere, they could actually offer both Klay Thompson and Kahwi Leonard max contracts to start next years free agency period off.

If you look at how the Spurs have done business they lock up their guys right away or before they hit the market. They can do this because Tim Duncan has been there and players want to play for him and Coach Pop so the Spurs have some leverage but for the most part they don't allow their players to go on the market. I am sure they are already having discussion with him.

Quick question: without that Spurs shooting coach - would Kawaii shoot as well as he does????

Wont' be surprised if he starts clanking it when he goes to another team.

i predict that kawhi will not test the market and will sign a near the max deal

I'm sure they will try their hardest to extend him before next off season!!!

I was thinking the same way but the article below changed my mind. I don't think Kawhi's agents will let him to sign an extension and it might actually be better for the Spurs too, if they won't extend his contract. Especially if they are willing to pay him huge amount of money, which is what Kawhi would want with an extension too.

I'm actually confused.

why are you confused

there is just a difference between not to sign a deal straight away because:
1. your team is a doghouse (hayward's case)
2. your team wants to lock you on better terms

I'm confused as I can't predict what the Spurs actually are gonna do/are doing.

I mean before the article I was thinking they would do their best to extend him, now I am not so sure.

The better question is...has Kawhi bought into the Spurs system and community enough not to ask for a max extension?

I wouldn't be super surprised, since Leonard is a quiet type like Favors, who probably values the feeling of stability higher than most do. I would still be surprised though.

Sure he might have but with Duncan almost done, the other main guys(especially Ginobili) declining and the rumors that Pops might quit in the near future, Kawhi's agent might try to convince him to consider a rising franchise instead. Maybe even the Jazz.

I'd rather edited then sign Klay Thompson to a max.

Given that Hayward and Parsons both got essentially MAX deals coming off their rookie contracts, I think it's safe to say that Leonard will to. As such, my expectation is that they will offer him the 4 year max deal and not let another team dictate additional terms - like a players option for the 4th year or a trade kicker. If he hits the RFA market, those terms are almost certain to be included in the language of the contract.

I won't be surprised to see Klay Thompson get a max deal, but probably not from Utah. I do wonder if Denver is still trying to trade Kenneth Faried. I've always liked him and think he'd be a great hustle and rebounds guy.

A player like Kawai with an arthritic Duncan and Ginobilli on your team, you do what ever is necessary to lock him up for the long haul.
