Burks 4 year $42 million extension!

Pretty much everybody outside of Jazz land thinks we overpaid. I tend to agree.

By how much though? I think $8M would have been a steal.. We got him at $10.5 per and it feels high... I just don't think there is a big difference.

Lets say he goes to restricted FA and one of the teams with massive cap space offers him $15 M per to get him to jump. I think it was a good gamble... too many teams with both a need and cap space.

This also helps him just play instead of gunning for numbers (not accusing him of this, just saying it would be natural for a guy in his position to do it).

Good point. And the fact he didn't gun for numbers in the first two games and played within the system probably got DL to up his final offer a little.

It's ridiculous to think that in 2016-17 we could have hayward, favors, Gobert, Burke, burks, hood and exum and still have room for a max guy and some role players. If maybe we trade kanter for a pick and add another guy too.

We payed a lot, but it is only overpaying if he doesn't continue improving.

Fish, it really seems like you highlight the aspects of Burks's game more than any other Jazz athlete-- and you tend to be more critical of other players when they screw up than when Burks does.
Definitely, and I readily admit it
It's legit impossible to speak critically of Burks without you jumping in.

Depends.
I have agreed that his defense has sucked many many times. I have been very critical of his free throw percentage. I have said many times that he needs to improve his shooting (he has by alot, could still get better though.... but I don't think he will ever be a great shooter)

If someone says derozan is a better shooter or takes alot more threes then I might disagree.

If someone says Burks HAS to shoot more threes to be able to score 20 pts per game then I will disagree.

Sometimes I argue when people criticize Burks. Sometimes I agree with the criticism.
Sometimes I see both sides.

My bad?

What happened to all the new TV deal talks?

I think this is not that bad of a deal. The Jazz probably and finally made their choices out of the core 4 over the last two years by signing with Favors, Hayward and Burks. All three are overpaid to some degree in my opinion but all three are reasonable investments on potentials of already-good players. The Jazz organization seems thinking to add Gobert and Exum to this mix and this is a good plan to me on the mid/long term. Kanter looks definitely not part of the plans anymore and Burke is questionable.

One thing I have always hated about burks is when he picks up his man 35 feet from the basket and presses him. No need to guard the guy way out there and you are setting yourself up to get blown by.

He was doing this in the Houston game against harden and I was in the crowd yelling "back off, back off"

jazz knows how to make their players happy. 10.5 M per a year is insane for a player like Burks. It must be destiny of small market teams to overpay average players.

Also I hate it how he will throw a bullet pass to a guy that is close to him so his teammate has a hard time catching it.

He did that in the second half of one of his pick n roll plays when favors set a pick (which burks used) and then rolled to the hoop and burks threw the pass way too hard and it resulted in a turnover.

In the dallas game there was a play where burks was attacking in a semi fast break situation and was going full speed toward the hoop and simply lost the ball. Sometimes his handle is too loose. though I think overall he has pretty good handles. At times its hard to control the ball running full speed through traffic

This contract is probably too much money for a player that just barely cracked the starting lineup for the first time and only really had one mediocre season of play under his belt.

Yeah. These people watch basketball religiously, and follow everything very closely.

I'm sure these "NBA people" understand the situation the Jazz are in as well. If we lose Burks, his alternative would probably cost just as much to come here in FA.

The Jazz have to keep their players, and have to take gambles on their players improving.

Everyone hated DeRozan's deal at the time too and that one worked out. I think Burks absolutely has the potential to at least be a DeRozan type player. I don't have a problem with the contract.

It is definitely too much money. Jazz are betting on his future and I don't have a problem with it.
