Why Did the Jazz Sign Toure Murry?

The Jazz went after him over the summer and I'm assuming they owe him guaranteed money. He did get into 50 some games with the Knicks but his only action with the Jazz was some limited minutes in preseason, a bus ticket to Boise for awhile and he has appeared in exactly zero games, has zero minutes and has no stats. This has to be one of the head scratching moves of the off season along with trading for Novak and watching him turn to ashes on the bench. Could any enlighten me as to Mr. Murry's potential? Is there a riff between the coaches and the front office?

Dudes like that are useful in practice when you are trying to teach a team how to play organized basketball? You can fill 9-12 with projects, but the jazz actually need solid bodies with a pretty rounded skill set. Also we have been pretty lucky on the injury front so far with our starters only missing a handful of games here and there.

I know about the practice aspect but I would think his morale has to be at rock bottom. All these guys want to play or the chance to play. Christopher got some time the last two games but it seems like the last few years the Jazz bring some DLeague dudes in and then they do nothing but ride pine. The last DLeaguer that made an impact for awhile was Kyle Weaver who if memory serves lead the team in scoring vs. the Kings but he was jettisoned soon after. Then there was the example of Yatta hitting the 3 pointer to beat the Cavs. If they were looking for practice players they should have kept Cooley, Motum and K Murphy around. Probably would have been cheaper.

Why does any team have 13-15 players instead of just 10? You rarely see more than 9-10 get minutes in a game. Last season in very limited mins he shot 43%/42% for New York. Jazz obviously thought he had potential. He's also listed as a combo guard, so perhaps QS is trying to develop him as the 3rd PG in practice but doesn't want to give him minutes over Exum.

As for Novak, Jazz had cap space and got an asset to have him on the roster. This board gets their knickers in a twist whenever DL (or KOC in the past) lets someone "walk for nothing." In this case the Jazz got a future pick for just parking a guy on the bench. Novak was also signed before Booker or Ingles. Those two are clearly better at the forward spots and deserve minutes over Novak, who is epically bad on defense.

DLeague rosters are at 10 so it can be done but the CBA stipulates I think a minimum of 13 players on the active roster and at a minimum cumulative team salary.

Yes, I know that. Sorry to not be clearer in making my point. Only 10 players usually get minutes. So 3-5 players on each team's rosters will get DNP's. These players are either developmental guys, injury insurance, bad contracts or just roster filler to meet the 13-player league minimum. Quin is putting his best players on the court. Hood and Exum are better than Murry and Booker and Jingles are better than Novak. Nitpicking a little, but I have seen a few more opportunities where I thought Novak could be used. But only a handful, and it may be that QS wants to put the players who are going to be part of the team going forward in those situations, not a player the Jazz will have for 1 more year (at most).

I think this explains Quinn's love affair with Jeremy this year.

As for Murry, We don't know what is happening in practice, and Hood, Exum, Trey, and Alec have all taken precedence over him in terms of development, and our best player (Hayward) also gets time at the 2.
It will be interesting to see DL's offseason moves when we are no longer in the rebuilding stage. Right now, it seems like he is looking for personalities/length/positions to push our key assetts to greater heights.

Murry is a good defender with length, which is good for Exum, Trey, etc. to face,

Christopher's length and D is good for Alec, Hood and Hayward to face in practice.

Novak's shooting and Booker's intensity are good for our bigs to be around.

Ingles is a comfort blanket for Exum, and he is also a smart, if not the most gifted, player.
