News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

Apparently. 5th string point guard isn’t a thing, so they might as well have created some salary ballast for a potential future trade by getting a savvy veteran as a mentor instead of a project that won’t play.

It just doesn’t make any sense to me. I know this should be a quibble but it reeks of a phoned-in or pet move and that **** drives me bonkers as a matter of principle.

I don’t know what I’m talking about and my anger is obviously completely irrational.

We already know he has some trade value since 2 teams already offered us something for him. I think it's a decent gamble that we can increase that value by developing him and him getting spot minutes here and there.

He seems like a smart player that shoots well and doesn't turn the ball over. That can work great in our system. George Hill ish type player that is young and cheap.

Mudiay isn't going to be the backup PG unless he really develops quick. Mitchell isn't playing much at PG. We want him next to Conley. Exum will play some there but also at the wing. There is help needed at the PG position right now. He can fill that possibly.

None of this screams phoning it in. None of this screams sticking to players that aren't good just because we drafted them.

Exum might end up being that wing defender people were waiting for the Jazz to sign...

I cannot express how much I hope they Exum explodes this season. Not literally, I mean from a successful basketball player standpoint. For all the joking about DedEx, I wish only tht best for the kid and I would be ecstatic if it turns out that most around the league views his contract as an extreme bargain by the end of the year.

That's what we all hope... I don't think any of us would see that as a bad thing for the Jazz. I will settle for staying healthy and becoming a solid/consistent contributor. He needs to do that before we can talk about exploding imo.

So the front office puts together by far the best roster we've had under Quin and ESPN ranks us worse than they have the past 3 years...makes perfect sense.

Warriors outside the top 10 too... people forgot that the Warriors were good pre-KD I guess.

The west is bonkers... again.

I think I understand this line of argument. I don't disagree with it in theory. I may not think it's as vital as you do, but it does make some sense.

The biggest issue I see is that you have to get the veteran you intend to sign to be on board with the plan/role (as against what they could be offered from virtually every other team, since we're dealing with minimum contracts, basically). I'm not sure how many would want to come here as 13th/14th men with a good chance of being used as salary fodder sometime later in the season. At that point, I think we're just as good using the 13th/14th roster spots to take a Royce-type flyer on a relative unknown.

Of course my point here depends on the Jazz intending to use those veterans in the way I described. The Jazz, or you, might have different ideas.

Not sure what you're expecting on the seconds. But if they turn into any sort of capable NBA player, they would likely be under control contract wise for likely a half-decade. They also become minor assets if they play overseas, which can be used in other trades. Utah loses nothing in purchasing those picks.

What I'm saying is that by buying second round picks (and spending a lot on them) the FO is giving the impression that these guys are good enough to be on the 15 man and very possibly be contributors. Teams don't generally purchase picks to take players that won't contribute. And the Jazz definitely don't do that. Yeah, we can keep them on two ways. But guys on two way contracts can only play in like 45 games and can't play in the playoffs. Was it worth buying the picks just for that? Two way spots aren't hard to fill.

I know nothing about gambling, but somehow our title odds (14-1) are better than three teams ranked ahead of us (Nuggets, Celtics and Blazers). Guess it has something to do with expected betting behaviour? Lakers have the best odds at 3-1, but are ranked 6th.
