Jazz Sign Rudy Gay

I didn’t see this coming. Between he and Paschall gives us a ton of flexibility. I guess the writing is on the wall regarding Niang. Wish him well, but Gay is longer and more athletic even at 35.

I am not sure how everyone is so shocked by the Paschall pickup. The rumors were there for days. The rumors started with Paschall before Ingles became a thing. Clearly they were both part of conversations but not sure how it is shocking. The Warriors saved $12,000,000 by dumping Paschall. That's a lot of cheeeeeee.

How could they save that kind of amount on a minimum player?

Dezzy talks about it in this article a bit. Thats the blurp that I was referring to.

Why would the Warriors want to get rid of Paschall? Well, there seems to be two schools of thought here. The Warriors save about $12 million in luxury tax by not having Paschall on the books (even though his salary is $1.7 million). But the Warriors also could be looking to make a trade and having the roster spot open might be what they need to make it work. Either way, it was a low-cost move for both teams.

The how? Because they have been over the luxury cap for 9 years now I think. I guess that the repeater tax makes them pay a $7X multiplier for ever dollar over the cap now? $1.7x 7 is the only way I get to $12 million.

Its another reason why a Joe ingles for 3 players may have made really good sense for the Warriors.

Sure, but Paschall makes $1.7M ca. I don't see how that turns into $12M even including all sorts of luxury tax.
The reason is the NBA put in a punitive system that progressively increases the luxury tax penalty the higher you are over the apron. For teams $20,000,000 over the cap or above, the tax rate is $3.75 for every dollar over the cap, and increasing $0.50 for each additional $5,000,000 over $20,000,000.

For repeater luxury teams, the amount goes up even more. For repeater teams, the tax is $4.75 for every dollar over the cap, increasing $.50 for each additional $5,000,000 over $20,000,000.

Kyle Anderson was fantastic against us in the Playoffs. Would love a Bogey trade centered around Anderson and Melton. Salaries match perfectly, and it would make both teams better, IMO.

Hope we at least picked up the phone.

I think it could happen during the season if it plays out right. MEM traded Jonas and he was a huge part of that offense. The Grizzlies might have a really tough time scoring and they've always lacked outside shooting. Bogey would be huge for them. If Gay/Paschall look good as scoring options hopefully that will show the FO we can move on from Bogey and get a more versatile player like Anderson.

Paschall was drafted in the second round, how is he making 12million?

I remember reading something about the warriors and oubre contract last year. His contract was only for like 18 million but they had to pay like 70 million for oubre last year due to all the penalties. Something like that anyway. Insane.

You are going to have read through some posts and I think you will be able to figure it out. (hint. He didn't make 12 million but it still cost the warriors 12 million to pay him if they kept him.)

Their tax penalty will be $120MM+ this year. That is more than most of the payrolls in the league.

Unfortunately, it is a bad time to be in the luxury bracket, since as I recall, the other (non lux tax teams) all share the penalty payments.

Wow
Gay has not won a ring yet
He must feel Jazz have a very good chance cause this may be his last contract he gets

It being a 3 years deal feels better than he being able to say goodbye next offseason
