Buying into the second round?

To be fair, Hayward has had a pretty decent career and doesn’t belong in the same sentence as those other dudes. Our folly was simply not trading him for any real assets.
So, Hayward or Paul George? Its clearly not the same asTrey Lyles vs Booker, thats clear. But "why do we always seem to end up with the fuzzy side of the lollipop"? (Marilyn Monroe quote for those who didn't catch it)

some good names mentioned so far, but assuming he stays in the draft, give me Kris Murray. same height, length, athleticism and skillset as his brother without the role to show what he can do - this is how you get a first round talent in the second round.

I'm unsure if they're all still registered for the draft - but Santiago Vescovi, Jalen Slawson and Tevin Brown are 3 guys I'd imagine available in that range that I'd like.

how did jimmy butler and jokic turn out? you miss all the shots you don't take, homester!
One of the dumbest things about DL is his complete disregard for the 2nd round. It was almost like he didn't want to be bothered with it. Would either sell picks for cash that they "reinvest in the program" and say they didn't have players they liked in the second round... or some bull **** about how you can't have 2 or 3 rookies... OR he would get guys that should go undrafted because they were good kids.

We haven't had a second round hit in a long while and its because we have traded half our "swings" to save a little cash.

Three years ago I and virtually everyone else on this board were salivating at the three "steals" we drafted in the 2nd round. Locke poured some cold water on our optimism by pointing out the percentages of players drafted that late making it. Also the Jazz has a coach that talks development but really doesn't believe in it as a young player will be sent to Siberia for making a mistake.

I liked the picks even though I know the odds. Most of them were on the right types of players. Dort went undrafted that year... they missed but at least they took the swings. The problem is they didn't attempt to get them playing time they needed to evaluate them faster. Its something Quin won't do because we are trying to win now... but I see a bunch of team in win now mode that somehow find ways to get those guys some seasoning. If they fail you can move to the next project... fail faster and it increases chances of success.

One thing I find weird with Quin and the front office is their usage of two way players. Two seasons ago Brantley and Forrest were the two way guys and neither played a minute with the Stars. Last year Forrest, Justin James, Malik Fitts and a third guy were the two way players. Forrest not a minute with the Stars and James and Fitts found the waiver wire only to be picked up by another team. On the Stars last year was a high 2nd round pick of the Celtics a couple of years ago and the Jazz treated him like a midget chucker and eventually he was signed by the Pistons. It's like the Jazz have no development strategy. If Smith is looking to save $$$ he ought to just fold the Stars.

Jimmy Butler was a first round pick. The Jazz had three opportunities to draft Jokic in that draft and whiffed.
good catch. but you get the point. there are good players that come out of the second round. take your swings - it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to trade or buy a pick there and they aren't guaranteed anything.

A Dhillon Brooks level of win can really help provide some cheap unexpected talent and aid in any stage of development. You can make all the contracts non-guaranteed and they make less than vets... take 2-3 swings a year if you can.

yep. in the last five years, these players have come out of the second round:

herb jones
xavier tillman
paul reed
nick claxton
cody martin
eric paschall
terence mann
jalen brunson
gary trent jr
jarred vanderbilt
bruce brown
deanthony melton
shake milton
dillon brooks
monte morris
thomas bryant
ivaca zubac
malcom brogdon
georges niang

all rotation guys in the nba, most rotation players on playoff teams (all but thomas bryant who has been a double figure scorer in the league). take your shots in the second round. you'll miss most of the time, but don't look at it as a throwaway because you can find dudes. and one thing most of those guys have in common - they weren't nobodies at the D1 level. they were all-american/1st team all conference type college players 90% from p5 conferences. guys like brantley, oni and jwf were fun, but that isn't the pattern of success. if you want a guy who will help you in the rotation, take the best guys from p5 schools. i'd also take productive euros in round 2.

Straight up purchases of picks usually don’t happen until draft night. Hopefully the Jazz can pull this off with any lead time so they can package it in some way to move into the 20’s to snag EJ Liddell. I’m giving him my Jimmy Butler/Jae Crowder guarantee (the two dudes I’ve been most high on coming into their respective drafts). Dude is gonna be real ****en good.

I think on the low end he could be like Jamychal Green… maybe with better shooting. It’s a super useful rotation player. I don’t think he gets past Chicago.

Jazz working out some second-round prospects tomorrow.

i like juzang, williams and rhoden. there is a reason they are second round dudes, but they have the potential to be rotation guys in the league. for williams if he can get in great shape he could be really good - with those passing and ballhandling skills and a shot that isn't broken, he has some unique abilities for a big dude.

Juzang has Nikola Jokic potential. Lots of skill but out of shape. Being out of shape probably led to his skills just like Nikola.
