Nitrogen Death Penalty

Which is just one more reason why there shouldn't be a death penalty. Sit in a cell and think about what you did.

Don't really grok the punitive appeal for folks on any side of the issue.

Ideally prison gets folks back on track in life but in extreme cases removes members from society who've proven they can't be trusted. Hopefully they can still have somewhat productive/rewarding lives behind bars (though obviously a long ways to go on that).

I generally support the right to die as one of the most fundamental human rights, and so would prefer the decision to spend life in prison or to end their life should be up to each individual facing a life sentence.

I totally get wanting the worst of the worst to be erased. If someone deliberately ended the life of my wife or kid, I'd kill them. There would be no arrest, and no jury if I found them first. That said, I am against capital punishment. I do not trust the government with having that power. Even for the worst of the worst I expect my government to be more restrained than I am, to be more righteous than I am. I thought it was put well by the fictional candidate Mike Morris played by George Clooney in The Ides of March.

I like your take.

I would add one benefit of having the death penalty on the table, it encourages some people to take a plea deal in order to avoid it. I think that is basically the only benefit of a death penalty.

I pretty much agree with you completely. If someone murdered my family and I had the means I would kill them. I also do not trust the government to kill citizens. I mean just based on their track record they aren't good at killing the right people for the right reasons. Our justice system would have to be essentially infallible for me to give grudging support for a death penalty. I also strongly agree with you that while I would want vengeance if someone killed people close to me I expect our justice system to be better than I would be in that situation. Justice should be dispassionate in regard to specific results.

Public executions were mass entertainment in their day. Punters would be hung or beheaded in the market square, local traders would set at stalls to sell to the crowds of peasants who'd folk to town for the festivities or to watch their starving neighbour be executed for stealing a loaf of bread, local dignitaries would rent rooms overlooking the gallows and have elegant parties in anticipation of the show. Actually sounds like a fun weekend in Riyadh....
All I said was, "This piece of fish is fit for Jehovah!"

It’s sad that some people are just messed up. I grew up with the brother of a guy that ended up sexually assaulting 5+ women in college (no one knows the exact count). He eventually was prosecuted after raping a child. I don’t necessarily think he should be executed. But I have zero confidence that he would live a productive life anymore. I can’t imagine that he won’t return to his messed up ways if he were ever freed. I just don’t know if it’s even possible to come back from something like that. Something gets messed up in one’s head.

That really doesn't matter if you understood anything else I said about it.
in your opinion. There's a percentage of the population that are psychopathic that will never have remorse and no amount of sitting in prison dwelling on their sins will change anything within them.

As somebody dealing with animal euthanasia on regular basis I am surprised that lethal injections in death penalty are so unsuccessful. 99.9% of euthanasia procedures we do in animals are quick and painless. We place IV catheter ( so that is where only source of pain comes) and then sedate them where they do not feel anything before giving final injection of pentobarbital. Never see any animal struggle with that, not sure why humans would be different.

Agreed. I have only witnessed one of these procedures on a pet of mine and it was better than I could have hoped. No pain. No struggle. Very calm and peaceful

Pentobarbital is used in a lot of lethal injections, supplanting sodium thiopental in many states due to shortages.

I thought the U.S. replaced the death penalty with student loans to ensure a drawn out and miserable death.

Drug makers won't supply drugs to be used for lethal injections of humans. States have been trying to get creative to get their hands on the drugs and switching up the combo, but many executions have been delayed because they can't get the drugs they need. Idaho just passed a law that allows them to do a firing squad if lethal injection is not possible.

Nitrogen is used by people in assisted suicides, or semi-assisted suicides because it is easy to get, the apparatus to administer it is easy to make with common household items and it is relatively quick and painless.

I suspect the recently executed person was trying to hold their breath or otherwise resist the execution, that's why they were struggling. Not because the method was causing pain or trauma. I would have expected them to sedate the person first, not sure if that happened or not.
