Jazz trade Fonteccio to Pistons for 2024 2nd

I find the most interesting part about this trade is what it signals about how the Jazz FO is thinking....especially what it means for KO and JC tomorrow.

The second most interesting thing might be.....there hasn't been a single Jazz media member saying this is opening up the path for TH? Even Bryce got mentioned by TJ. This is a feel bad trade because the Jazz are kind of punting on the season, but usually that comes with the positive spin of "this clears the way for young player to get time". I see it with Ochai and Bryce, but no TH? What's going on there? Does Hardy really not like him that much?

I will say, TJ did kind of hint that there's more in store and that will be the TH playing time trade (prob KO).
That is what it is about really. Don't think the beat writers mentioning Ochai/Brice is indicative of him not being good. Its cuz they know KO getting moved here.

I don't think Tech leaving is punting... but if its Tech/KO/JC for Fournier/Grimes (currently injured)/ second rounders... then it is a signal towards a tank.

I don't know what is/isn't the right move here with the pick convey thing... but this is kicking the can down the road. Its fine... but not a long term strategy. There will be even more reason to do it next year... and the year after that lol. It basically signals that this summer is a huge pivot point.

I remember being unhappy about when the jazz traded FOUR rotational players and 2 picks for what might be 1 pick. We were in the playoff hunt at the time.

And I wasn't near as unhappy as some in this thread are lol. I remember Cy thinking that trade was a good one.

Oh how the tables have turned.

most of all i just feel so bad for the guy. I saw an interview at season's start where he joked that his wife told him not to get traded. There's a human side to all this which isn't fun to talk about but is real
This I conpletely agree with. Its fun and games for us fans, but players hate this time of the year.

This is true but it is extremely less sad than millions of other things happening to people every day

If I went home and told my wife that we have to move to Detroit and make 10's of millions of dollars over the next few years playing basketball then she and I would be the opposite of sad

It's not THAT sad

I mostly hated last year's trade because I felt like we bailed Minnesota out of a very toxic situation and I was hoping (for the sake of our future draft capital) they'd implode .

Sure, but in addition to possible other moves we also need to see the what the drop off is when our #9 pick gets meaningful minutes due to this.

Like I said, it’s a clear signal the FO is not prioritizing the playoffs. Assessing the drop off does not coincide with prioritizing the playoffs. I’m not saying it’s incorrect to want to see how your GLeague guy does in the real league, but it is a clear as day signal you do not care too much about making the playoffs.

Yeah... but you don't bring a project into the rotation when there's a playoff race going on.
Just tell yourself that Simone got injured.

Lots to hate about it

If nothing else happens, it’s still a clear signal the Jazz dgaf about making the playoffs. I don’t know if you want to call it punting or not, but the FO clearly isn’t doing their best to win this year.

I will say, come draft time, I bet almost everyone will be more excited about having that pick than the play in spot. The draft is fun. Everyone loves it.

Agreed. They probably figure there is a decent chance we miss the playoffs if we don't trade Simone anyways. I mean right now we are in the last play in spot. How have teams faired in the playoffs in previous years as the 10th seed?
Front office probably doesn't see this roster as a contender and also doesn't see anyone available to add to make them a contender

Yeah punting is strong but clear indifference... which has been their position. What likely happens though is we hit the sweet spot of #11 where we give the pick but also don't make the play in... Jazzfanz will melt.

Lot of people saying Simone is a two way player who's crucial to winning?

Is there any stats to back it up?

Last time I check he has -0.5 OBPM and -1 DBPM combined for -1.5BPM which is good for 7th on this jazz team.

He also has a 116 offensive rating vs 121 defensive rating.

Both stats indicate we are actually losing with Simone on the court.

Yes a 6’8 sharp shooter is rare and all but he's only had a little over half of NBA season of good shooting as sample size and he's only made less than 2 threes a game during this span.

I love Simone and he plays hard every game but I have my reservation when it comes to extending him at MLE.

Just ask teams that are paying Davis Bertans and Joe Harris

Also if this is the only move its almost more damning of not having a direction. At this point go ahead and miss the play in, but be bad enough you keep the pick.

Well he's like the 6th or 7th best player and his projected replacement has been hot trash for a couple months.... so yeah its not great.

you cold hearted mercinary bastard lol

I think I havent seen anyone say "good riddance" here or anything like that. None of us is happy to see Simone go.

I also havent seen anyone say that this improves us as a team, so we all agree its a downgrade.

So the funny thing is that this whole 25 page thread is actually more about whether this indicates a direction (which we dont know) and nuances of whether the value was good enough to let him go or not.
