The Biden Administration and All Things Politics

So I didn't watch Bidens state of the union address. Can anyone tell me how many times he mentioned the radical right evil republicanTS? Did he refer to trump the chump or say we need to dump trump or call him trumpty dumpty? Did he talk about how he is the greatest president of all time and knows more about everything than everybody else? Did he talk about people coming to him with tears in their eyes telling him how much they love him? Did he try to sell any biden shoes, cologne, trading cards, coins, or hats? Did he mention how persecuted he is by a weaponized impeachment witch hunt hoax?

Or did he behave like a normal human being. (these are rhetorical questions of course)

While Biden acted like a normal adult human there was this:
There was heckling from GOP ranks, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., pulled on a red MAGA cap (a violation of House rules, by the way) as Biden entered the chamber.
A super-PAC supporting Trump began airing a TV ad that showed Biden tripping on airplane stairs while, on a split screen, Vice President Kamala Harris was shown laughing uproariously. The narrator questioned whether Biden would live long enough to serve through a new four-year term: "Can he even survive to 2029?"
The ad instantly made the list of the most controversial commercials ever aired for a major presidential candidate, perhaps debuting at the top. It was presumably timed to get under Biden's skin hours before his big speech.

This part of his speech was nice:

“My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy,” Biden said. “A future based on the core values that have defined America: honesty, decency, dignity, equality. To respect everyone. To give everyone a fair shot. To give hate no safe harbor.”
“Now some other people my age see a different story,” the president continued. “An American story of resentment, revenge and retribution. That's not me.”

Biden looked great. You could see from the way he was engaging with people as he walked into the room that he was in tip top form. If Biden always looked like that, no one would be talking about his age. He did himself and his campaign a lot of good with that performance. MTG was stupid to take on Biden when he was in that form.

There were three things that I did find concerning but none of them was Biden’s age or mental decline. The points he brought up that I didn’t like were:
  • He threatened the Supreme Court to their faces
  • He committed to putting American boots on the ground in Gaza
  • He demonized half the country
Of those three, it was the threat to the Supreme Court I found to be most concerning. This was coming from the same President who had recently boasted the Supreme Court couldn’t stop him and the same one who pulled the protection detail from Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh which nearly led to Kavanaugh being killed by a partisan nut before Congress passed a bill requiring Biden to provide 24/7/365 protection to the Supreme Court Justices.

Biden sat the Justices up front, and although he flubbed the line, what he meant to say was “In your decision overturning Roe v. Wade you wrote women were not without electoral or political power, you’re about to realize how right you were about that.” He went on to vow “I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again”.

First, the Supreme Court is supposed to be insulated from political pressure by design. Second, Biden said that he was going to dispose of the check and balance the Supreme Court has to rule laws unconstitutional. The decision that overturned Roe v. Wade found the Federal Government, the Judicial Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Executive Branch, all of it, did not have the power to mandate that issue. Biden essentially said he was usurping the power to unilaterally overrule the Supreme Court.

Eh, all he really said is that women are unhappy about what the supreme court did and may vote accordingly (vote for people running for Congress and president who are for women's rights)

The I will restore roe vs Wade was a meaningless sound bite. I'm sure that if he has an opportunity to put new judges in the supreme Court then he will choose ones that support women's rights just like trump intentionally put judges in who supported conservative views.

You might be reading too much into it.

What was the comment that demonized half the country?

Trump likes to brag that He, not the supreme court, put an end to roe vs Wade when what he really means is that he put supreme Court justices into the supreme Court who ended roe vs Wade

Biden was saying the same thing with that comment. He would try get supreme Court justices in the supreme Court that would be for reinstating roe vs Wade if given the chance. I think all presidents probably try to get justices in the supreme Court who align with their politics if given the chance. I'm doubting this is a new phenomena. I don't really know though. Maybe trump was the first to do it.
If he really wanted to reinstate roe vs Wade and he actually had the ability to do it then what is he waiting for? He is currently the president. He would have done it months ago.

Biden definitely was not saying that. He made no reference at all to changing the composition of the Supreme Court if given the opportunity. He said that if Congress sends him a bill codifying Roe v. Wade, he will impose it with the implication being that the Supreme Court can't stop him.

As for your earlier question of demonizing half the country, he started off with "Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault here at home as they are today." He didn't say freedom and democracy were the most threatened on January 6th, but rather they are under maximum threat today. There aren't riots going on today. There are campaigns for the 2024 election today. I know it is a sentiment that is popular here on this forum, but Biden was giving voice to the idea that anyone opposing his candidacy is opposing democracy and freedom. That is a demonetization. If Biden loses and Trump becomes President again, I'm confident there will still be freedom and democracy in 2028. Biden is scaremongering with theatrical doom saying projecting his non-supporters as the villain responsible for ending all the good and hopeful things.

A candidate is running for president who called a state rep telling him to find votes that didn't exist, who sent fake electors to try to overturn the election, who sent a mob to the capitol to try to interfere with the election process. Who continued with his stop the steal nonsense for ever (he is still doing it)

He rightly believes that trump is anti democratic process and is vocalizing that.

You would think that after all the hateful rhetoric from trump that you would have thicker skin that that lol.

Demonizing half the country would be if he said something like "the extreme radical Republicans are destroying the country". Lol at your victimization of half the country simply due to a statement by Biden saying that democracy is under attack.

As for the whole roe vs Wade thing....
When trump brags that He, not the supreme Court or the changing composition of the supreme Court, eliminated roe vs Wade I never see you worry about that comment.

And again, Biden is literally the president right now. What is he waiting for? Why not override the supreme courts decision right now? Why did he allow the supreme Court to overturn roe vs Wade in the first place?

Talk about fear mongering

Trump says stupid stuff, but that whole process worked exactly how it is supposed to work. I go on and on about the United States fundamentally being a Republic where the limits supersede the will of the people instead of a Democracy where the will of the people has ultimate say. I cherish the limits. I cherish the checks and balances. I cherish the Bill of Rights which enumerates areas the will of the people aren't allowed to intrude upon.

When Trump claims personal responsibility for overturning Roe v. Wade, I know he is full of it. It wasn't that long ago and I was paying attention. The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Trump did appoint more than his fair share of justices to SCOTUS but all of it respected the limitations in place. There was no expanding the court. Justices died and a very savvy Mitch McConnell made the most of the opportunities, and the Federalist Society made the most of their opportunities, and Trump made the most of his opportunities all within the confines of the US Constitution.

Biden has openly refused to comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding the discharging of student loans. Biden proved that he can disregard the Supreme Court's check on his power but so far he's been unwilling to go full Gavin Newsom to impose laws without any input from the Legislative Branch. Given that I think Gavin Newsom becoming President is a real possibility, I do not like Biden's boasts of not needing to comply with the Supreme Court and vows to further ignore Supreme Court decisions.

Say what you want about Trump, but the limitations held and court rulings were complied with. The same cannot be said of Biden. At least one limit on his Presidential power did not hold. It isn't Biden that I'm worried about. It is the next guy who will use what Biden did as a starting point to further erode the limitations I cherish.

You failed to answer my question.
Why doesn't Biden override the supreme Court on roe vs Wade? What's he waiting for?

I did, but I'll answer it again. So far Biden's been unwilling to go full Gavin Newsom to impose laws without any input from the Legislative Branch. Biden is waiting for the Legislative Branch to codify Roe v. Wade which he vowed to impose in direct defiance of the Supreme Court finding of the Federal government not having the power to issue mandates on that issue.

It is important to understand that Roe v. Wade didn't hold that a law protecting abortion was constitutional. If found the opposite. It found the laws banning abortion were unconstitutional. There weren't any laws protecting abortion federally. The court created a protection for abortion out of nothing. When the current Supreme Court overruled that earlier decision, Biden didn't have anything to ignore the Supreme Court on or he likely would have as he has vowed to do if the Legislative Branch will send him a bill.

That is NOT what the Supreme Court found. The Supreme Court decided against the previous Supreme Court ruling NOT against a federal law. Roe V Wade asserted that the Constitution itself granted abortion rights.

Congress has never passed a federal law protecting abortion access. Doing so would not be in defiance of the Supreme Court.

You are being intellectually dishonest and it seems to be intentional.

Biden specifically committed to NOT putting U.S. boots on the ground in Gaza. If you think that's a lie is one thing. Claiming that he said he would put boots on the ground is another, and by another I mean another lie by you.

The US economy is the strongest in the world and Joe Biden was right to say so in his State of the Union address, a rightwing Republican economist allied to Donald Trump and a co-author of a plan to reshape the federal government said on Friday morning.

“Let me just say one thing positive about where we are right now,” Stephen Moore told Fox Business.

“One thing that Biden said last night was true. It is true that the United States today has the strongest economy. There is no question about it.

“If you look at what’s happening in Europe today, Germany, Britain, France, if you look at Japan and China, they’re not growing. And so it is true … the way I like to put it is we are the least rotten apple in the cart and that’s something that’s important to cheer.”

A member of hard-right groups including the Heritage Foundation, FreedomWorks and the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, Moore is also a regular analyst for Fox.

He went on to vow “I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again”.
Maybe it as just me. but I could have sworn he prefaced that with a condition about a cooperative Congress.

Second, Biden said that he was going to dispose of the check and balance the Supreme Court has to rule laws unconstitutional.
No law was overturned.

The decision that overturned Roe v. Wade found the Federal Government, the Judicial Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Executive Branch, all of it, did not have the power to mandate that issue.
Quote from the majority opinion, please?

I read:
On the question of abortion, the Constitution is therefore neither pro-life nor pro-choice. The Constitution is neutral and leaves the issue for the people and their elected representatives to resolve through the democratic process in the States or Congress—like the numerous other diffcult [sic] questions of American social and economic policy that the Constitution does not address

Biden specifically committed to NOT putting U.S. boots on the ground in Gaza. If you think that's a lie is one thing. Claiming that he said he would put boots on the ground is another, and by another I mean another lie by you.
Biden’s comments on committing the U.S. military to Gaza were “I’m directing the U.S. military to lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast that can receive large ships carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters.”

One does not construct a pier by waving a magic wand in the air while reciting “piero appearo”.
