2014 Draft: Our Best Shot to Become a Contender

Chad Ford just said this about the 2014 Draft:

"Look, every year NBA scouts hate on the draft and most years it ends up being better than they said it would be. This year the hating has been consistent and when you look at the top of the board, it's tough to get super excited. However, there is a lot of depth here and lots of players on our Big Board are going to make and stick in the league. Next year, however, could be special. We have one of the best incoming high school classes ever. Have a few elite international players. If a few of these underclassmen come back, it could be a very special draft."

We need an alpha male type player as well as a coach and a PG. We need to go lean next season starting Favors KAnter Hayward and Burks. See what they can do and at the same time position ourselves to pick 1-7. The draft is loaded with talent and it's not like we are going to win with Big Al, Mo, Corbin, and Millsap (I do like Millsap as a 3rd big). In the End, we might actually be pretty good if we go this route. Maybe Favors and Kanter become one of the top 5 best front courts in the league. Regardless, With most of the Kentucky guys going back to school along with Gary Harris, 2014 could end up being a loaded draft... I'd rather not cement ourselves at 14-16 pick by keeping average guys who are not ever going to be #1 or #2 or even #3 options on a championship team (I guess Sap possibly could be a number #3 option but he'd have to be playing alongside a defensive juggernut at C as well as LeBron.

What are the chances that we trade one of our 4 for a high draft pick next year to get a point guard- a true floor general?
 
Ty has a weakness for the 'vets' so get them off the team and have the core be the vets and the team goes far.

Eventually at least.

That might just give the Jazz a decent pick next year, but I'd rather win and hope for a diamond in the rough at 21

Trey Burke is the Real deal and he would totally solve like all our problems at PG (Most of them atleast), but Ford is saying that all the GM's and Scouts are saying he is a high lottery pick. That being said, there really does not seem to be any Great PG's coming out next draft, at least not right now anywat
 
I keep going back and forth on Mo. He has talent, and there is a possibility that he hasn't adjusted to the team yet. Then again, his 'hero ball' habit is rather maddening so maybe he needs to go. I have been saying lately that the Jazz don't need a 'pass first' point guard as long as either Hayward or Burks are on the floor so Mo can be a scoring guard and it's ok. The team could probably use a rookie third guard, but that's something you get from summer league or the second round of the draft.

Remember, Mo almost has a guaranteed contract here if he gives the team a friendly discount so whoever is drafted will come off the bench and take away Burk's time.

Honestly, Trey Burke would be better at running the team right now than Mo. Seriously. Mo is an undersized 2. He doesn't know how to win games. He doesn't know how to lead a team. futhermore, he just makes terrible decisions at the end of games. Mo doesn't know how to win and run a team. Stockton and D-will did, but know doesn't know how. All he knows is that he can play hero ball at the end of a game and about 20 percent of the time, make one of his hero ball shots. it is maddening. everyone wants to blame Corbin, But i blame Mo more than anyone on this team. He lost us like 3 games in march with his stupid play. I have never been more fed up with another player. Mo williams is terrible as a leader of a team. He needs an alpha male type player to keep him in check for the dumb-long2-hand-in-your-face-20-seconds-left-on-the-shot-clock-no-one-there-to-rebound shots that he takes
. We just need to lose Mo and Quick. We were actually playing pretty well before he came back. He is not good at all. He is super ineffcient. infact, he is one of the most inefficent players in the league. he is one of those guys that gives you numbers but does so in an inefficient way (I.E Allen Iverson[ i am mostly referring to the end of his career] and Al Jefferson becasue of his defense).
Honestly, as the NBA goes more and more into an age of advanced metrics, Players like Mo will only be able to find a spot on teams as a guy who can come off the bench and score whiel your best players get a breather.

And realistically, What are the chances of landing a Diamond in the rough at 21. That seems to be quite uncommon whereas, if you get a top 7 pick, you likely have a 60 to 70 percent chnace that it will pan out. But i guess if we are winning 55 games in the regular season, i could be happy with that
 
I'm all for stating the young guys next season. Screw the vets.
I am scared though if we keep Ty, no matter how brutal the vet backups we pickup in the off season may be, he will start them and it will be just like this season all over again.

I guess that would accomplish getting a good lottery pick though. Just sets the young guys back another year.

How about a young coach who specializes in developing talent, rather than sacrificing all development just to "win" a few more games.

Upgrading from Mo is a close second. He can play PG for a team with Lebron, but not a team that needs to run the pick and roll or create for players like Favors and Kanter.

I've heard good things about Steven's and we see what he has done with Butler so he is definitely worth a look. I am concerned that we would have some growing pains with another head coach with no head coaching experience (NBA). But he merits an interview and maybe more. I still believe that SVG could do wonders with this talent.

I agree! I too am of the Mindset that SVG (along with a solid PG and No Jefferson) would turn us into a top 5 team in the west.

This is what I got out of your post. If we start Favors, Kanter, Hayward and Burks we will suck so bad we will be able to get a 1-7 pick in the lottery.

I on the other hand, don't think they suck that bad.

Maybe some combination of our pick, the GSTankers pick, Marvin, Evans, 2nd round picks and money could get us a high pick to land him.
 
This core needs a PG who is good at running P&Rs and knocking down threes more than anything else.
SVG would be a huge upgrade over Corbin too.
