Actually, your video shows exactly that: it was Sexton's defense, or, rather, the lack of it, that allowed Young to make a game-winning shot. Young had only 4 seconds to make it and Sexton has not even tried to slow him down. And he did not have an excuse of being too short: Young is shorter and Sexton is probably faster than him.

That is the main knock on Sexton: there are quite a few players who can generate offense on his level but Collin is literally one of the worst defenders in the NBA among the vets.

You just don't know ball. Sexton did push up enough to make sure Trae didn't get a 30-35 footer or draw a foul. Get in his space early and he is for sure drawing a foul which is the worst thing that can happen.

Guy goes completely out of area to swipe a contested loose ball... has the calm to setup a quick dribble move and bury the jumper. Plays the right percentages but a guy makes a super low percentage shot... so he's a loser... FOH you get the fat crayons and get to sit at the kiddie table sorry.

If it was anyone other than Trae Young I might say get up in his space a little more, but that guy is going to find a flop angle if you get close. Its amazing that some want to hate Sexton when he is lovable AF

Reminder that Sexton is a good player, he's fine with being in Utah, he likes Coach Hardy, he's a culture-setter, and there's no guarantee that some guard we draft in the mid-late 1st round will be as successful as he is within 3-5 years.

Letting Young heave the ball from behind half court is the right thing to do in that situation. He misses that shot 9 times out of 10.

One of the hardest shots to contest because the guy is moving forward and is one of the most successful foul merchants in the league. Even if you contest or block cleanly there are enough moving parts to make it look like a foul and we have no challenges left, but also Trae doesn't need to shoot a half courter if Sexton doesn't go hero mode in swiping the ball, creating a three (when you are down 3) and knock it down.

So many people are trying to convince me that playing no defense is the best defense. And for Collin it's probably true: he does not know how to play good defense and would have probably messed it up if he tried on that last shot. But any other competent guard could at least try to slow Young down. All he needed to do was to eat 1 extra second. Actually, it was more than Sexton: it was a collective fail of the worst defensive team in the NBA, when nobody tried to contest the inbound pass, nobody tried to make sure that Young receives it in an awkward position... Everybody ran back letting the Hawks to position themselves in the best possible way to utilize those limited seconds. But Sexton definitely had his own defensive failings on that play.

Also, Young making this deepest three is no coincidence: for years he has been one of the players with the longest average 3-point distance. It is his specialty and he is really good at that. He shoots from the logo all the time. For him, it was not a desperation heave: it was a shot that he knows he is capable of making, the shot that he is probably practicing regularly.

I just watched the last game focusing exclusively on Sexton's defense: omg, Collin is worse than I realized and much of it has nothing to do with his height. He is often slow-jogging back on defense and gets left behind all the time on fast breaks. He loves ball watching when defending someone in the corner and, as a result, loses his player all the time. He is constantly out of position, being inexplicably drawn in the paint while there are already plenty of Jazz bigs (and, while doing it, leaving wide open opposing guards on the perimeter).

It's like the only defense he cares about is on ball and steals/rebounds in the paint.

And there’s no one that competes harder and plays with more passion. His biggest fault is that he’s always the smallest dude on the court, and his biggest strength is that he’s coachable. Look at him from year one to now being on this team. No one has improved more on this team.
