2026 NBA Trade Discussion Thread

There's not going to be an easy solution to fix our defense....but maybe our identity can just be having a lot of size and rim protection. JJJ may not be at DPOY level anymore (if he even deserved it), but you'd have to think that between he and Kessler we can be at least average and let our offense carry us.

I mean, how would we get JJJ while keeping Kessler? That's A LOT of money as I assume the Lakers are going to offer Kessler a very big number this offseason. I think we would have to trade our pick this year or Ace for JJJ as well (probably Ace preferably as Ace's fit with Lauri-JJJ-Kessler kind of sucks)

It's a good point. Money issues won't start until Key's money kicks in. Took a quick look into this and it looks doable but very tight. If we trade for a bigger salary it does probably mean Kessler is gone at some point. A more realistic JJJ scenario would have us with a cheaper C. If the Jazz had locked up Kessler to a descending contract, they'd be in a much stronger position to trade for another high salary guy.

And keeping Lauri? Or trading Lauri for JJJ?

(This Lauri is a 3 charade has to stop whenever it is we get serious.)

It's not a perfect fit, but JJJ is like an infinitely better fit than some of the other names mentioned like Sabonis, Zion, Trae, other unwanted PG etc. I think Lauri is better on defense being a secondary big than chasing wings, but ultimately don't think it matters too much.

As far as trades that could happen this deadline, I'm looking at Jon Issac as a high potential trade candidate. The only problem there is that he cuts into next year's cap space which the Jazz supposedly have big plans for. If you trade for him and waive right away it's $8M on the books for next year. Keep him and his GP goes over 52 and it's $14M.

For this reason, I think it's less likely that he goes directly to us. But I think he will get traded and we might be involved in a musical of chairs contract situation like previous deadlines. Issac has got to be moved somewhere though.

I think trade/free agent targets (and possibly who we want to trade) are going to be dictated by the draft. If you are getting AJ/DP/CB then I think that drastically changes how you approach everything.

Of course, which is just another reason why a trade of real significance won’t happen this deadline. There’s not really much to look forward to this deadline except money moves which is why I’m more interested into looking into what teams can duck tax/aprons.

What teams might be looking for tax/apron relief this summer, similar to Boston last year?

Is it possible to add some quality players by trading for players in to our capspace?

One goal for the trade deadline should be to open up roster spots. If we're going to count Svi as a development win (we should) then we should try to hit the well again. If we can't find trades for our vets, buy them out and use roster spots to tryout new players. That could mean giving Harkless a real contract or a revolving door of GLeaguers.

Trade for guys we end up waiving/buying out.

I understand that Key has taken huge steps for being top 10-15 PG but these trades come like 2-3 years too early. Taylor, Cody, Collier, Brice and Kyle will not be here in 2029 and of course I'd like to be wrong with that. I just hope that Ace will become smth in 3 years and WCJ has had too few games yet to decide what he really is. Jazz will draft several young players before trying to be serious in POs, not just able to do it with these guys.

Jazz have 5 guys that they should definitely look to trade at the deadline. All vets.

Nurkic, Svi, Love, Anderson and Niang. Try to pick up an asset or two in the process, force the young guys into bigger roles and start figuring out who to keep next year and beyond.

The only guy I’d actually think about hanging onto for now is Svi - who looks like a decent bench wing guy on a cheap contract. He might have more value next year. If somebody will give you something for him. . . great. If not, I’m not getting rid of him just so I can say I did something.

No reason Utah should stand pat at the deadline. Gotta churn the roster just a little bit more.
