Was perusing a Timberwolves forum after their devastating loss to the Jazz and there was a bit of interest in trading for Collier to solve some PG issues and get salary relief. A few things that were suggested:
Dillingham, TJ Shannon, Conley, unprotecting top 5 2029 1st for Isaiah Collier + payroll relief
the Utah angle for Collier + Svi or Filipowski
Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham to Utah (along with unprotecting the 2029 FRP) for cap relief
Rob, TSJ, Miller, and 2 SRP
for
Collier, Sensabaugh, and Love
If we could get Walter Clayton Jr, the Jazz #18 pick, sure, that would be great, but it likely negates the main reason we would gamble those top protections.
This deal isn’t about a decent back up PG like Collier - it’s about paying UTA to absorb $17 mil in salary from us this season. That doesn’t just save the owners $40 mil in cash, which I hope they would reinvest in salary in the future. Getting below the luxury threshold this year sets us up to go OVER the lux the next two years to keep this team together, or at least not be forced to bust it up for financial reasons if we look like a contender.
I think there is all sorts of flexibility for Connelly to negotiate when he talks to the Jazz. We can send out some combination of Conley, Dillingham, Leonard Miller, TJ Shannon, 2nds, and alterations of pick protections. On 1sts UTA already owns. UTA can send out Collier, Svi Mykhailuk, Clayton, Sensabaugh, Filipowski, cutting Kyle Anderson, Love, or somebody, 2nds, alterations of pick protections, and payroll relief. Maybe we could get Clayton, but the Jazz would likely be more attached (even though I bet they didn’t expect Keyonte George to be this good when they picked him in the draft!), and even the slight $1.35 mil more that he makes than Collier makes it much harder to duck the lux, and that’s the goal. Maybe the Jazz like Dillingham and Shannon’s potential so much, no pick protection decrease is needed?
Once again, not my suggestions. Just something some here might find interesting/amusing. To be honest, other than unprotecting the 2029 pick and being very mildly intrigued by Shannon Jr. they don't really have anyting that interests me.
