A Place for Conservatives

Here is a little liberal on liberal discussion. The poor guy cannot even call himself a capitalist because he'll be ostracized but the Democrat party... Socialism sucks, has always sucked and will continue to suck in the future.

Stay on topic please. This thread is supposed to be about conservative views and topics not liberals.

What's weird is conservative politics are not conservative. Hence the conservative vs. liberal labeling is flawed.

Expound please

I would agree, I would characterize them as radical right wing, conservatism is generally characterized by a respect for institutions, traditional social arrangements, respect for the law, public and political conventions like honesty in public office and maintaining supply. These are generally conservative values, the Republican party does not adhere to these values at all they are a party of radicals, using a divisive social agenda to pursue predatory economic policy.

Shouldn’t you have thrown in the obligatory “Murdoch press” for good measure ??

I still try to hold on to some conservative values. In college, I was heavily influenced by conservative icons like Edmund Burke, Michael Oakeshott and Raymond Aron, but over the last ten years especially, their ideas and influence has been trashed by the reactionary right. No question that traditional conservatism is a dying philosophy.

Well naturally the Murduch press are emblematic of this phenomenon, Fox News has brought the lunatic fringe into the mainstream and started to normalise a political and cultural discourse based in fantasy, prejudice and outright lies, the sort of propaganda machine the Goebbels would have dreamed of.

I'd say its mostly dead, interestingly its dying politically here, our own conservative party is being captured by the far right, however electorally the conservative center-right seems to be rejecting the far right agenda.

Lol. Ya. Unfortunately theyre all liars atm. Seriously Shorten is the most straight faced liar I’ve seen in politics.

Oh for the days of someone like Keating, leaders with vision and balls

Shorten is a massive philanderer, must be something about the name Bill, bastard can't keep it in his pants.

Dunno how he’s gotten away with it.

His been mostly irrelevant for a long time and additionally the media doesn't really report that sort of thing, Prue Gower was rumoured to be Howard's long time mistress. The libs tried to make a thing of it when Barnaby's **** got put out in the street but the media wouldn't bight. Pants-less Bill tried it on with a lefty lawyer I know.

Nicola Gobbo ?? Lol

This could be said of both parties.

No not really, only one side is building walls to excluded people, its an old trick of the far right to marginalise minorities, we all know where it ends up.

And the other is using identity politics. Different tactics. Same goal. Power and control.

I don't think they are remotely similar, immigration and people seeking asylum has been used as a political tool in this country for 20 years, we now have people interned indefinitely for exercising their human rights according to UN conventions we have signed. (The UN also being a body Australian law makers were instrumental in forming) These are internment camps where people are held without trial, indefinitely, are set up in remote isolated south pacific islands, where detainees are beaten and at least one has been murdered, most likely by the guards employed to keep him in custody.

These policies have been implemented and maintained by right and left political parties. They are an abject betrayal of what our country has stood for since the war, of our historical legacy as good international citizens, by acting in this manner we make it harder to insist that other countries respect human rights, international conventions around say conservation or nuclear non-proliferation and so on. It becomes the race to the bottom, a lawless Hobbesian international system based solely upon the idea of might is right.

Using exclusion and degeneration as political tools only leads to increased instability both internally and externally, it makes us all less safe.

I don't think identity politics has ever led to a gulag.
