Another thing to consider is that Favors is the 40th best defensive center in the league this year based on statistics. I know other factors come into play but as Locke pointed out, this might be because Favors is undersized to play the 5. This would of course mean that Playing Jabri at the 4 and favors at the 5 would only spell disaster.
This. The Jazz are undersized at almost every position with a Parker as PF scenario.
C. Favors - undersized
PF. Jabari - undersized
SF. Hayward - undersized
SG. Burks - perfect sized
PG Burke - undersized.
How could that team ever matchup with the like of OKC? Etc. traditionally, the successful teams have a perfect to oversized player at PF, who is either a two way player, or just offensive minded e.g.,:
Portland has Aldridge
Mavs have Dirk
Clips have Griffin
OKC has Ibaka
Spurs have Duncan
Warriors have Lee
Grizz have Gasol
Bulls have Boozer
Some of those players can play defense, but most cannot. The most glaring thing is that they are all very good offensively. Lee is the least inspiring out of them, and he is the one that is most undersized.
We already have an oversized offensive minded PF in Kanter. Favors at PF doesn't do much for us because he is so limited offensively. We tried Marvin this year at PF, a brilliant SF defender, but we ended up 30th in the league defensively. We just can't play undersized, it doesn't work.
I was listening to Dennis Lindsey's interviews archived on 1280, and he was saying how are defense worked best when Favors was under the rim, but that was ultimately the role he sees Gobert filling for us. He also saud he was and is very high on Kanter (this is back in Jan when Kanter was struggling), and said that it was on him as the GM to surround him with other teammates who can play team defense. Favors either needs to become much better offensively, or he probably won't be a starter or on our team when we make our championship run.
Jabari would be perfect at SF if the combine shows us he can have the footspeed to defend the position. At PF, he just doesn't fit the mold of winning basketball. If his best case is Carmello, that's not winning basketball.
