Ace Bailey ROY watch

No one is saying Ace sucks or Ace can't improve his foul drawing.

At the end of the day we are all being armchair GM/Coaches/Scouts/etc and pointing out a players weaknesses and what they need to improve on is perfectly OK to talk about as it is what real NBA teams would do

To be fair, you did assert earlier that his lack of free throw attempts should be “a massive concern” if you hoped he could be a star. That’s going a bit further than simply pointing out a player’s weakness.

I do think it’s worth discussing and keeping an eye on, esp given its importance in the efficiency inflated era of basketball we are in. But we should give him a chance to develop that skill, before we fret too much or try to put a limit on his ceiling over it.

Yeah and I stand by that. If you expect him to be a star, that's a major hurdle to get through. You cant really any stars below .3, and most are closer to .4 and above

Maybe this is just semantics, but to me massively concerned implies a level of worry that he can't/won't improve enough in this area that's not justified at this point in his development. I'll be massively concerned if he doesn't improve in going to the line over the next few seasons, but ya gotta give him a chance to improve.

Yeah, it's semantics policing.

I think everyone is concerned to some degree in regards to Ace drawing fouls. I don't see anyone saying he can't get better. We are just saying that IF he can't get better at it, it's going to be an issue.

I just find it annoying that some posters act like discussing these things is somehow jinxing the player. They act like saying something critical is akin to blasphemy and we all must be devout believers who never question that the best possible outcome won't happen.

If I thought Ace couldn't get better I'd be talking about him the way I talk about Taylor Hendricks

This play stuck out to me. If we're able to rewire Ace's brain to make this his go to move instead of fading away from the defender, he's going to get to the line and be very efficient. This is pretty much an unguardable move with the way refs officiate the game now. Key gets this and1 call all the time.

It did to me watching as well. He leans in and that’s an and-1.

I think he did fine here. As long as he’s not fading away he’s kind of unguardedable. If Demin shows a little bit more resistance (or Ace has a little bit more respect from refs) that’s a foul call. He will probably never be the foul baiter Key is, but the ability to mix this in will make him so much more efficient.

The sad thing is that we are hoping to corrupt a player. Jumping into defenders, doing "a veteran move" etc. is not what the basketball is about. Right now Ace is playing smart by finding the open space for his threes, long twos and dunks. Instead, we want him to exploit the bizarre NBA rules for the unwatchable endless trips to the line.

And he will probably learn to do it since the pressure and the payout are real. But it would be bad and ugly basketball. I always disliked peak Harden and I will die on this hill.
