What's new

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (democratic socialist) wins NY primary

She says that the US is running Nazi style concentration camps at the southern border and that the world is going to end in 12 years if we don't adopt her Green New Deal. You think this stuff is true?
She didn't say anything about them being "Nazi Style"

Totally not concentration camps. Super normal, very cool.

Yeah, well, Tosh makes me giggle.

I like to live a lil. I understand why he's not for everyone, but don't morally make me feel bad for it. Douche move.
I find tosh hilarious. He is offensive as hell but IDGAF.

If you can laugh at dull, repetitive hate and not feel bad about it, I won't try to make you feel otherwise. You do you.

Yes so why indulge them. Need to bypass as many as possible imo.

Because it doesn't matter how hard you try to avoid distractions over semantics or side issues, if one of the argument is determined to avoid discussing the central point, they will find a way to avoid it, no matter how much effort you make. So why bother?

1) She never said "Nazi style", nor made an allusion to Germany/Nazi/etc. at all.
2) She never said the world was ending in 12 years.

So, since she did not say that, my opinion on their truth has no effect on whether she lied.

Yeah, I understand his material can be pretty offensive. I have a dark sense of humor. I'm mentally capable of separating his jokes from real life and real life from his jokes.

I also love Howard Stern. Stern has said some pretty terrible things in his life and just because I like him doesn't mean I endorse or support his behavior or comments. Nor does it mean I have to separate myself from him completely if he does say something offensive. The idea of that is too BS and fake for me.

Everyone has done something pretty ****** or said something pretty ******. When it's a comedian though, and you get offended, that's on you imo.

I laugh a lot at Tosh. I imagine millions of others do too. That's probably why he's been on TV for over a decade doing the same gig.

Now, of course I exexpe you to have a comeback along the lines of Zombie's response saying that it's just millions of idiots who like him.

You know, cause you guys are the voice of comedic reasoning. The guys that are sadden, offended and call it hate speech.

I giggled.

Sounds like you are letting people reacting in bad faith to her use of the phrase to inform you view of her intentions.

It's really not arguable that the so called detention centers are concentration camps, I get that term makes people feel queasy, but that's not a bad thing. That should be the proper reaction to what is happening.
I thought the proper reaction would be to fix it, but thanks for letting me know all about my motivations and how much guilt I should feel. Don't know what I'd do without you and your moral superiority.

This has been pointed out already but when you are held in "detention" it's generally meant as a punishment for some offense you've committed. This is not the case, many of these people are simply asylum seekers.

Look up the conditions in those camps, specifically the so called "dog pound" and "ice boxes," as well as the separation of children and infants from their parents and then tell me concentration camp isn't an accurate description of what's going on.
And yet again I'll state I'm not arguing the definition, I'm arguing that arguing the definition is counterproductive. As we see in your fine example of continuing to argue the definition when I've already made it clear I find that a waste of time. So instead of discussing how to make it better you continue to try to convince a guy, who already said it is deplorable and needs to be fixed, that your definition is right.

Why bother what? Arguing with them or not arguing with them? Sounds like you are talking in circles. Did you actually come to agree with me but can't come to admit you might have changed your point of view?

You seem awfully defensive about this for someone who has no problem with his behavior.

Why bother what?

Why bother going out of your way to use neutral descriptions completely without a negative context when a) the people on the other side of your position will just find some other distraction anyhow (because they adamantly do not wish to discuss the actual problem honestly), and b) a negative context is appropriate? What do you actually gain?

People will only fix it when they accept that it's wrong to begin with.
And arguing semantics is the best way to get the other politicians to agree with each other? As soon as you convince them all to label it they will get right on fixing it then? Didn't know it was that simple.

So detention center to you sounds like a vacation? Why not call it a death camp then since if it takes a connotation with a more negative label, the more negative the better, right?
