As the trade deadline inches closer...

Why on earth did people think the IT/Kyrie deal was bad for Boston? Would have loved having Hayward paired with IT.

Not sure if this has been discussed. I agree with Zach Lowe:

"There have been rumblings the Kings might dump Labissiere to free up a roster spot so they absorb extra contracts from Cleveland in the percolating George Hill deal. If that's true, a smart team will buy low on Labissiere."

Interesting trade from Bleacher (take it with a grain of salt) but I'd like to hear others opinions:

From Charlotte's perspective I think it gets shot down because Jordan has said they want an all-star. So then the question becomes, can you alter this trade so that Love (an all-star) goes to the Hornets and if so would the Jazz still be involved? I say no.

Edit: Another thought is if IT goes to Charlotte then maybe Jordan can save face and consider this deal.

This is the preface to “there just weren’t any deals out there.”

The Jazz will make moves. Letting Favors and Hood walk in free agency would be a disaster. Re-signing one or both to a stupid amount of money and screwing up our flexibility would be an even bigger disaster. Moves HAVE to be made. There is a 0% chance of this deadline coming and going with the Jazz doing nothing.

And there may not be. Favors will be an UFA. As such, I think he only has value to:
1. A contender who needs a big. But it's very difficult to match salaries. Who else has a need for a C/PF and expirings that could match up?
a. Cleveland? Only if Cleveland sees moving Love back to the 4 and Favs at the 5 improves the team enough over having TT at center. But even at that, Frye is only $7M. Still need to come up with the difference. Alternately, TT could be the trading chip. However, I don't see Utah wanting 2 more years of Thompson at $16M, even if they added Osman or their late 1st. Favors and Hood for TT and the BKN pick is a trade I'd say would be fair, but I doubt that happens.
b. New Orleans? We sure as hell don't want 2 more years of Asik's salary. And TBH, teams may want a more mobile PF to compete against the lineups they'll face. Favs only translates as a 5, IMO.

2. As a matching asset in a trade with a non-playoff team. If one of those teams wants an expiring, then Favors or JJ could be dealt. For example, Mirotic. Or in a deal for Fournier. But teams may prefer to take a chance on Burks.

I would add that taking on a 2-3 year bad deal might be a bigger disaster than letting Favs walk. Because of his cheap salary and the fact he'll be a RFA, Hood potentially has 29 suitors, while Favs' pool is very small.

I think trading Favors may come down to who Chicago wants in a trade for Mirotic. Do they want an expiring, or would they rather have Burks and see what he can contribute next year. Actually the latter would be preferable as it frees up cap room and lets the Jazz make other trades without worrying about his salary on the books.

Was with you until "0% chance".

Just 11 more days to the deadline.

Jazz are 5 games behind the playoff 8th spot, and 7 games above the top lottery position.

While I doubt he is a franchise changing player, I am intrigued by Labissiere. If he could be got on the cheap, or reasonably cheap, I think he might be worthwhile taking a flyer on. He has some nice games now and then, and it is Sacramento he is playing for after all, a team not necessarily known for getting the most out of their young talent. (Although a good chunk of their “young talent” was not necessarily that good to begin with.)

A #9ish pick isn't really a franchise altering asset, especially in a 7 deep draft. It is better to have it than not to have it. But if you have a team capable of getting to the finals, it is something you flip for help now, every single time. Basically Cleveland has to place everything not immediately necessary in their rotation on the table and come up with the best deal possible. It is a long deep hole they will be in after Lebron leaves, no need to hasten that along, Jerry Krause style. . .
This is a very reasonable reply, You could very well be right. In the back of my mind, however, I wonder whether Cleveland really wants to go to the finals to lose the Golden State yet again, or whether they might just prefer at this point to begin the rebuild while they can still get something for LeBron before he leaves.
