I imagine most people don't really care but I thought it was interesting that on The Ringer's NBA show today, Simmons kind of hated on the Jazz. Skip to like the 40:12 mark

I'm paraphrasing but he says it's clear the Jazz are everyone's let's blow smoke up their *** team. And then he says he think it's going to backfire terribly and that he still doesn't get "that Utah team."

Two other noteworthy things he says, he's not sold on Quin Snyder and he seems to think the Jazz won't be good because "tie game two minutes left, who's shooting?"

Chris Ryan counters Simmons comments however with some Jazz love, which I thought was refreshing.

I think Simmons comments are kind of lame frankly. I mean, at this point, I don't think there is a team in the East, sans Cavs, that is clearly better than Utah, and I would pick Utah in a 7 game series over the Celtics.

Also, I think I heard a stat not too long ago from Locke That Hayward has the 4th highest FG % of any player in the league over the past two years in a game that's is within 5 with 2 minutes left. Something like that. If that's even remotely close, I'm sure Simmons has not idea.

Discuss Bill Simmons refusal to say something positive about the Jazz, every year for the past 5 seasons haha.

Jazz seem to me to have both a lot of upside and depth compared to last year's injury-riddled team.
It's also unproven.

Hard to really make credible definitive statements about the team will be.

Guesses for now.

Fair enough. But it seems with a deeper team/More talent experience and less injuries we should surely win more than 40 games. I think last year we would have won around 45 without the injuries. And adding JJ Hill and Diaw, as well as internal development, one would think 48-50 wins is reasonable, which is far away from "Backfiring terribly.

Also worth noting that last year, the Jazz offense improved in clutch situations. It was our defense that sucked in the clutch which is strange. The numbers bare that out pretty clearly. I remember DL and Locke talking about that just after the season ended.

Meh. I've always thought Simmons to be a very entertaning writer/personality, but I've never considered him to be any more knowledgable than any random fan.

Maybe slightly above that of the facebook commenters.

Defense is mostly an effort thing... cultural. I'm assuming there have been plenty of FO/HC/team talks about that very thing.

Simmons just say the weirdest **** to get views and clicks and listens (right word?), ... I wouldn't worry too much about him.

Yeah Simmons used to say all the good things about the jazz when they sucked. Now he doesnt like them and they'll be great.

Also he's jealous because he wants Hayward on the Celtics.

That's probably why he's so sour on the Jazz... LOL

He knows how butthurt Jazz fans get when he criticizes the team or FO. I'd guess he said all this for that very reason.

I agree.
I think some of the talk of the jazz being top 5 team in the league and top 3 in the west are a bit much.
I really really like the roster.... But they have not done anything yet and the new additions could have chemistry issues and there could be locker room trouble with minutes and whatnot.

I think the jazz will win around 48 games and be anywhere from 4th seed-7th seed.

He's never liked the Jazz.

I think the Jazz have a chance at being top 3 out west but I'm betting on a 4th/5th seed myself.

There is only a handful of teams that are clearly better than Utah.

Yuup. Unless it's about a large market team, Simmons doesn't have much insight.

This part actually has some merit. If we keep relying on Hayward for the final two minutes like we did last year , we're screwed. And if Quin continues to have Hayward be the primary play maker during these final two minutes, that's a reason to not be sold on him.

But hopefully Hood will be the first option come crunch time, with Hill and Johnson playing a big role. I wish I could include Exum here, but there is too much uncertainty on whether he will reach his potential this season.

The only really good thing about Simmons is that he used to employ Zach Lowe. Other than that he was an antidote to the "fan boy"ism of most other NBA commentators. Pissing in Cheerios is his shtick. If he is pissing in YOUR Cheerios, it means you have arrived.

He's kind of a rich man's Cy.

Cool, I'd rather have some doubters than an all out dick riding fest.
