Dallas Mavericks @ Utah Jazz GAME THREAD (Airing on TNT, January 19th, 2012 - 8:30 pm Utah time)

Harris was 0 for 7 tonight. He got a technical free throw. Otherwise he wouldn't have scored. That's your ballgame right there. He and Kidd were having a "who has less offense" contest. Harris won.

They're able to overplay because the Jazz don't have a point guard who can exploit it AND because the Mavs D collapses on the roll man, which is helped by the lack of outside shooting for the Jazz.

I don't think they overplay. We ran PnR from all 3 spots tonight. But Carlisle tightened things up after CJ's 1st quarter. They just do a great job of stringing out the ballhandler. The difference, to my mind, is we run PnR likes it's a single play. Dallas runs PnR like it sets the table. If they don't get anything off the PnR, they're already looking for options like Marion down low, or passes on the perimeter. We have to find offense if it doesn't work, they don't care if it doesn't because they already have sets built off it not working.

Harris had a huge steal and assist to cut the game to 2. At that time it seemed like a great move. It just didn't work out today. Harris has actually been our best 3 point shooter this year.
There was no basis to put him in at that time; he had made zero FGs, and besides that "huge steal and assist", he did nothing. That "huge ... assist" was one of his only two assists for the entire game. In nearly 24 minutes. And a 3-point shot wouldn't have been necessary to win the game; assists were more important. Watson showed that.

I maintain my claim.

Even thought they lost...
I was encouraged that the Jazz kept fighting to stay in it, even though they missed a lot of shots they could have made.
Dallas is a smart vet team, maybe the Jazz will learn a few things from the experience.

This is still a good learning game for the Jazz. I like the emotion and competitiveness by both Watson and Favors. If the Jazz had Howard tonight, they would have had a better shot at winning. He's a versatile player who can make plays when the normal stuff is getting defended well.

A Josh Howard-type player is the kind of player the Jazz should look to draft. I think Quincy Miller could make a decent imitation.

I'm not denying that I would have stayed with Earl, I'm just saying that initially the move looked great. Hell, if Harris hits that 3 we are all praising him showing confidence in Harris by putting him out there. And if you look at the stats, Harris has definitely been our best spot up 3 point shooter, by a large margin too. Sometimes things workout, sometimes they don't. Tonight we just sucked (as a whole team, not just Harris) on the offensive end. Our execution was poor on all fronts besides CJ (who would ever thought we would say that?).

Why did we bring back Bell, Hayward, and Bell this game? They all stunk. Hayward was sort of OK so I can let that pass. But none of them had games that merited being on the floor in the 4th.

Bell does deserve to be mentioned twice.

I would have gone with Miles, but I understand putting Bell in. Burks had lost Beabouis twice in the 4th that directly led to buckets. I definitely don't trust Burks to execute the offense in the final minutes of a huge game, nor to play strong D. Kind of the same with Miles, but he was playing great ball that game, so I would have gone with him.

i'll say it. The refs were terrible tonight. They did their darndest to give the mavs a chance to win this game. Last 5 minutes of the third and most of the 4th were just full of calls that made me jump up and yell. Just so ridiculous.
Mr Stern's NBA. It's almost as if he called the crew and said "the mavs have suffered enough."

Sure, the jazz could have played better and pulled it out. You can always say that.
Whatever. It is a major advantage when you get so many calls go your way that were just crap.

Yeah, its something we have to live with and will continue to live with until David Stern croaks.

Wasn't Hayward on Marion? Cj had got scored on 2 or 3 trips in a row on post ups, I think Hayward stopped that.

Kanter has to have the worst reputation now. All my non-Jazz friends send me "lol @ this stiff" text these two TNT games about Kanter. He is like a Deer in headlights under the rim, yet he is as big as everyone else on the court.

Yes, it looked good for the first 30 seconds.

Then it looked not good for the remaining 2 and a half mintues.

And at the point of time at which the decision was made, there was no basis for putting Harris in, except the flawed traditional thinking of the Sloan era that Corbin foolishly adopted.

Hell, if Harris hits that 3 we are all praising him showing confidence in Harris by putting him out there.
Speak for yourself.

I would've been saying that it's better to be lucky than smart.

And if you look at the stats, Harris has definitely been our best spot up 3 point shooter, by a large margin too.
But again, a 3-point shot wasn't as important as someone who could run the offense, which Watson had clearly done better.

That's another example.

CJ played only 21 minutes. He played 5 fewer minutes than Bell. CJ deserved a few more.

The lineup of Watson-Burks-CJ-Millsap-Jefferson was working.

Hayward played good D on him in the 4th. I think it was teh 1st or 2nd quarter that Marion was going to town on Hayward. He also took Millsap to town a couple of times.

C'mon, Cyrone; you're better than that. Kanter was showing inexperience; the effort was there, and the talent is there. He hit two free throws. He pulled down almost as many RBs in 13 minutes as AJ did in more than twice as much time. He was slightly anxious on that goaltend, and he needs more burn to figure out how to score around the rim. Kanter's performance was promising, if anything.

I don't know what to say about Harris rigth know. I think it'll be better for me later when my mind is clean to talk about him. Rigth now I'm sleepy and there is a loop of Harris' 3 pointer in my mind, playing nonstop.

I've lots of good Memories about old clutch situations though.

For the record I wanted Jonas.

Kanter did okay. He was drawing contact. The issue with him is that he gets so close to the rim and the baseline that he basically pins himself. He has no room to move, and everyone knows where he's going with the ball. He'd do better to take one dribble and try to dunk on the other side of the rim. If he can't do that, then he should do one or two pump fakes.
