David Aldridge's Offseason Grades (not pretty)

It sounds like Aldridge is ranking these teams as to who got the bigger stars. He doesn't really dive into why certain teams made the moves they did. The biggest lack of these rankings are balancing moves with $$$$ on the books come the CBA-day-of-reckoning.

Now more than ever, off-season rankings matter less. I can't wait to see some of these massive contracts for mediocre talent to boomerang and smack these owners right in the face.

As for the Jazz, I've been very pleased with the additions/subtractions so far, especially considering the current market.

This. Sounds like Aldridge is another one of those talking heads that thinks teams like New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, etc are great teams because they have stars and made risky moves.
Then when the season comes, the Spurs, Pacers, Jazz, etc. sneak up on him and he starts making excuses.

That's just off-season fluff. Chad Ford likes our off-season. A lot of people think there's another move to be made--probably a trade with one of our bigs--but we've got to see how Hayward and Burks look in camp too.

Did we get better? Yes
Did we cripple the team financially by signing or trading for guys with massive contracts that don't match their production? No

Bigs: already have one of the deepest rotations. Trades may have been explored, but nothing developed. No big deal, something can be done at the deadline. Or the Jazz maintain maximum salary flexibility (and an advantage in terms of re-signing) by letting Al and Paul become FA's and not taking back any longer-term contracts.

Wings: CJ, Howard and "Roger" OUT. Marvin Williams, Foye, and Burks (more PT) IN. HUGE step forward for Utah.

PG's: Worst case: MO = Devin. Best case: Mo is a better complement due to his shooting and runs the offense better.

I'd rate the off-season a solid B.

Hard to disagree with this.

I think most of us would say the next big thing is already here, he just hasn't become what he's capable of yet. In other words, we're a lot closer to becoming great than he gives us credit for.

Overall, I've never been a big Aldridge fan. In all honesty, I find this board more insightful than any person who gets payed to talk sports.

Maybe a negative we had was that we didn't add a cheap rookie from the draft to our team?

Personally, I'd rather have a type of offseason we had than to be someone like the Knicks, Rockets, Twolves (20 million to AK? Yeah have fun with that...) or Magic...

Aldridge posts his articels on NBA.com He is employed by the NBA. Everything the NBA announces, prints, publishes, broadcasts, releases, discusses by way of Stern or any of his Minions is calculated to create an image, brand, perception, or advantage with one goal in mind--to sale the most.

The NBA is like a giant reality TV show where the producers are trying to find ways to increase ratings. No the show is not scripted but the producers arrange for you two attractive young people to get into a hot tub half naked and start serving alcohol....who is suprised by what happens next? Need to extend a semifinals series, send Joey Crawford to ref the next game, need to boost support in a big market that has been mediocre for years and just missed out on Dwight, send in Aldridge to write nice things about Houston.

The Jazz are stable, the fan base is small but loyal, there is optism not fear about this team, and since somebody has to be at the bottom of the list the Jazz are a safe bet.

Having Houston at 8 is absurd. Their roster is awful. Many expect them to challenge for the worst record in the NBA this season and Aldridge has them as a top 10 team? Ironically, I think Utah had one of the best offseasons in the league and could challenge to be a top 5 team in the West. Plus, I'm of the opinion that the "next big thing(s)" are already in town for Utah, we are just waiting for them to develope.
