Derrick Favors by the numbers

How can you say that about a 20 year old big man with elite athleticism? Think of Bynum. He's at the end of his SECOND contract and JUST starting to play well. It's going to take Favors a year or two, even from now, but he will be a very nice player for us. He shows flashes as a dominant defender and rebounder.

Favors has a spin move and a dribble drive coming off the low post. His J is not good. Even without any move whatsoever he can beat guys just with length and quickness. He has shown flashes of being a spectacular PnR finisher.

As far as his handle I don't know who Trout wants at the 4-5 but those guys generally don't develop guard skills before they are old enough to drink. Head case, LOL!

DFave is still pretty raw but to say he has zero moves is baseless. He's a ton better than he was this time last year. Last year he was getting called for travels constantly when he'd try a move. Now he's getting to the rim with regularity.

I think the only thing holding Favors back is more playing time and experience. Give him 30 minutes a night and he will be a monster especially if the Jazz get an elite PG to pass him the ball.

favors' problem recently hasn't been a lack of post moves, trout. it's been that he explodes to the hoop and then blows the layup. but that's an easy fix. the guy has an amare-type ability to explode to the rack, he just has to get better at finishing.

the other problem is minutes. until recently, with the 3-big lineup, the guy was basically capped at 20 minutes. because no matter how well he was playing, corbin always pulled him to go back to big al.... pretty much always. there have been so many nights when favors was the better player and still wound up watching the late fourth quarter from the bench. look at his march numbers: even though it was his best month of the season, he exceeded 23 minutes only THREE times, and two of those were because al was injured.

in the loss at phoenix, for example, he has 9 points and 8 boards in 15 minutes and the suns had absolutely nobody that could guard him. was he rewarded with more minutes? no, he played just 15 minutes and the jazz lost by two. ridonk.

per-36 numbers in march: 16.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.4 steals. he's just not getting the minutes, no matter how well he plays.

Not sure that it's an easy fix, but you hit the nail squarely on the head. Even though he looks half asleep all the time, I'm frequently amazed at how quickly he's able to get up and down the court and to the rim. Unfortunately, his feet and hands need some serious work. If he finds a semi-soft touch, he'll be deadly. If he doesn't, you still have a player who can give 12, 10 and 2 with solid man, transition and team defense. What team doesn't need a guy like that?

It amazes me how often the announcers comment on how good the defense is playing and that Favors is always on the floor at the time.

On the other hand when the announcers comment on how easy the other team is getting open shots at the rim Favors is almost always on the bench.

I agree. And can you imagine how much Sloan would gush over his defense? A big man covering the P&R like he does. I wonder if Sloan were still coach if he would trade AJ's offense for Favors defense and bring Al off the bench.

The way we play offense doesn't match Favors skills. If we had Deron at the point he would look a lot better on offense. I think his jumper is a work in progress. Sometimes it looks good sometimes it doesn't. Favors is a slasher not a post up big. Marshall would help here.

Favors is good. So is Kanter. Let's remember that with both of these guys, they were thought to be projects. They're developing post-games on the fly - particularly Favors - and we're seeing real progress. Considering both of their trajectories, they seem to be about on-track.

For both of these guys, they need minutes to make that next jump.

I am not a Favors hater nor a Favors apologist. I see him as a young player with tons of potential who sometimes plays great, and sometimes looks lost. Potential is a dangerous word, it gets fans to see things that aren't really so and can get NBA coaches & GMs fired.

Right now in his second season Favors numbers look almost identical to Kwame Brown's numbers in his 2nd season. see here:

If that doesn't make you nervous, then you got more nerve than me. My biggest concern is not his physical skills, its mental. Hopefully he can grow out of those little lapses. But until then, I'm not ready to crown him as the next Jazz
