that refs are instructed to homecook in regular season games so people subconsciously will be more willing to pay (higher) stupid prices to see the game if they know their team will most likely win? Discuss.

obviously any revelations of this actually happening would be super damaging to the sport. Since I don't think you could keep the lid on this conspiracy for very long (because there are just too many players involved), I don't think there's a good probability that it's happening.

We live in a world where no one can keep a secret or keep their mouth closed
If it were happening we would know

Nah, i just guess refs are humans and as the players they can be influentied by the enviroment around and the distress and pressures put upon them (not always in the way it comes the best out of them/their work)

I think we aren't too far away from bring able to have a computer be the ref. With enough cameras and processing power computers will be way better at getting the right call. I'd welcome it

As far as this being a thing, we already had a huge scandal about exactly this. We know refs were shaving points and influencing the outcome. For a fact. To assume that because it isn't on the radar anymore that is doesn't happen at all is naive. I think refs change up how they call a game based on personal biases, having a bad day, bring pissed at a given player, on a power trip, you name it.

But it would not surprise me to find out there is some unwritten **** going on influencing the officiating beyond just making rule changes. This is a money-making endeavor and the league has been very very focused on the marketability of their product, especially during the Stern and Silver eras. And they will know what is needed to make a marketable product. So you better believe it is very possible that refs are instructed to increase the entertainment value of the product even if it is at the expense of making the right call.

I did some reffing at the Jr high level and a big part of our prep was a reminder that we wanted the kids to be safe first, and to have fun second, and to officiate to facilitate those 2 goals, even if it meant we weren't calling literally everything. Wouldn't surprise me to find out the NBA refs are instructed to maximize the entertainment value of the product first and foremost, even if it means purposely making or missing questionable calls.

Hence the obvious change in calls depending on the score. keep it close.

Ask yourself this. Is the NBA sponsored by gambling companies? Do they have any say in what happens? Pretty clear they do.

I think this when I get secretly high and have to go visit my in laws
It is not as much a secret as you think. My son used to think he was fooling everyone. Truth was we just didn't say anything about it.

Fair enough, but this is mostly a Bret Easton Ellis reference:
