Duke's Jon Scheyer gets invite to Jazz camp

Jon Scheyer is one of those guys with a good game for college. Sweet shooting stroke with the spot-up jumper, was pretty efficient everywhere else and helped lead Duke to a national title. Dukies love him.

But NBA scouts were not impressed. Not athletic enough, can't defend at that level. He can shoot but was considered one dimensional. He went undrafted.

But the Utah Jazz are giving him a shot -- they have invited the guard to camp, according to the wise men at Sham Sports.

On one hand, the Jazz actually have some open roster spots if they want to carry more people. So there is that.

The problem is, let's look at the guard rotation in Utah: Deron Williams, Ronnie Price and Sundiata Gaines all at the point; with Raja Bell, C.J. Miles and Othyus Jeffers at the two. That's six guards deep.

Not sure how Scheyer cracks that group. Or why Utah keeps a seventh guard. He's probably just camp fodder. But he is getting a shot.

I don't know how Scheyer DOESN'T beat out Jeffers, Gaines, or Price in most situations. That's how.

Anyway, there's a thread for this right at or near the top of the page. Unnecessary.

Somebody should inform that professional journalist that Jeffers and Gaines aren't guaranteed a spot on the roster.

If the kid can handle the ball and hit an open jumper, he should be able to get the team into the offense. I guess defense is the big question with him, but he'll get a chance.

he's so white lol Greg Miller is just greedy and just wanna sell tickets to training camp so they got another white mormon lol

Alright obviously the most important question is he Jewish or Mormon? But seriously as has been mentioned journalism is at a horrible state right now. Pretty much all of us on the board knows that Gaines or Jeffers could be cut without paying them and if this person thinks they are guaranteed a spot--Get a new job!

...I have one question and one question only! Is he afraid of hoppers or intimidated by them? If not, give him a shot!

And every day in camp he can remind Flash about missing that potential game winner.

Scheyer could be a good player to keep and develop. He's played both guard positions and has good size. We had pretty good luck with another undrafted player who was supposedly too slow or couldn't shoot or something like that. Scheyer could very well become a decent backup combo guard, like Ronnie Price...except he can actually make a shot. Or like Sundiata Gaines...except he can actually hit a FT.

I think what this shows, along with bringing in Watson, is that the Jazz would like to give Deron a bit more rest. Playing Williams 38/per, having to rush him back into games when the 2nd unit is losing too much ground - that simply can't continue. Deron gets too beat up towards the end of the season.

Let's ****ing hope so. Although there is the possibility that AK and/or Hayward are running the point on offense so Price can't grind it to a halt.

I bet this little fly is afraid of this "hopper." ;)

Seriously, it doesn't look like he's much afraid of anyone.

Ryan Thompson's coming to camp with us for sure, but then he will have to compete against Scheyer, Jeffers, and Gaines for the last few roster spots.

Gaines and Jeffers are pure scrubs. Might as well 'roll the dice' on some players that will only be as bad at worst.

-Bump Jeffers, sign Ryan Thompson
-Bump Gaines, sign Scheyer, Weaver, or Watson
-Sign Fesenko

Then call it an offseason.

Scheyer seems like a poor man Hayward to me.. why would you want that? Need somebody a bit more physical in my opinion...

Best case scenario - he shoots the lights out - but then isn't that just like having a Kyle Korver?

I just don't get why we kept getting one-dimensional players in the past (see Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver).

Hope we don't go back there again...
