The People’s Union, a grassroots organization that seeks to “unionize people to take back our power” is calling for a 24-hour nationwide “economic blackout” on Friday, February 28, 2025 targeting the biggest businesses in America, including companies like Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Target, Exxon and others, to highlight the companies’ part in creating an “economy designed to exploit workers, suppress wages, and keep the majority of us in a constant state of struggle. These are the forces that have stolen our financial freedom, manipulated our government, and kept power in the hands of the wealthy elite.”

Blackout participants are asked not to purchase anything online or at big retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Starbucks or other big companies for 24 hours on 2/28. Participants are also urged to not spend money on fast food or gas, or use their credit or debit cards for essential spending, since doing so financially benefits big credit card companies. Paying bills and buying food, medicine and other necessities are fine during the Blackout, but people are asked to patronize locally-owned businesses, and not big corporations or chain stores.

What is the People’s Union?

According to its website, the People’s Union was founded by “John” (Instagram video), a guy who goes by the handle TheOneCalledJai on social media accounts. John writes, “I am not a politician. I am not a corporate backed activist. I am just a man who has lived through struggle, seen the truth, and decided to do something about it.” His bio sketch says he had a difficult youth and grew up in a poor, abusive household. As a young man, he worked menial jobs just to feed himself and eventually concluded that “the system is rigged to keep all of us trapped” in economic despair.

The goal of the People’s Union is to organize average working people to “create a force strong enough to counterbalance corporate control, political corruption, and economic exploitation.”

A famous Adbusters ad spoofing Marlboro cigarette ads. Adbusters is not affiliated with the People’s Union. In the 1990s, Adbusters started and annual “Buy Nothing Day,” held on the day after Thanksgiving every year (“Black Friday”), to counteract overconsumption, excessive materialism and wastefulness, and its impact on the environment.
Economic Blackout Day mimics Buy Nothing Day, a national day of protest against unbridled consumer spending started by the Vancouver, Canada-based group Adbusters Media Foundation in the 1990s. Adbusters publishes Adbusters Magazine, “one of a handful of magazines in the world that receives zero funding from advertising, either print or online, corporate sponsorship or government/foundation grants.” The magazine contains spoof ads that criticize a host of common consumer products. Buy Nothing Day falls on Black Friday every year, the day after Thanksgiving and the biggest consumer spending day of the year. Adbusters also originated TV Turnoff Week and Occupy Wall Street.

The People’s Union is not affiliated with Adbusters Media Foundation or the November Buy Nothing Day.

In explaining the conditions that led up to the need for the Blackout, the People’s Union’s website says, in part,

Mega corporations have driven up prices, underpaid their workers, and outsourced jobs while raking in record profits. Banks and financial institutions have trapped generations in debt, inflating interest rates and making homeownership nearly impossible. Politicians ”both left and right” have accepted corporate bribes, passed laws that serve billionaires, and ignored the needs of the people they claim to represent. The system has been designed to keep us powerless, but that ends now.
The narrative of the Economic Blackout from the People’s Union website is:

This is it. The first real test. The first demonstration of power. The first time we send a shockwave through the system that has controlled us for too long.

On Friday, February 28th, we go dark. For 24 hours, we stop feeding the machine. No spending. No unnecessary purchases. No engagement with major corporations.

Because for decades, they’ve made you believe that you’re just a worker. Just a consumer. Just another cog in their endless cycle of profit and control.

But they’ve lied.

John, founder of the People’s Union
The truth is simple: they don’t run this country — we do. And the moment we choose to stop playing by their rules, the moment we cut off their supply, the moment we remind them that they need us, not the other way around, that’s the moment we begin to take control back.

WHAT HAPPENS ON FEBRUARY 28TH?

• No purchases. No Amazon. No Walmart. No Starbucks. No unnecessary gas fill-ups. No online orders.

• No engagement. Skip the big-brand entertainment, the news cycles designed to distract and divide.

• Absolute focus. This is about unity, discipline, and demonstrating collective will.

This is not a protest. It’s not a gimmick. It’s a warning shot.

Because if they ignore this one-day blackout?

We escalate. We go longer. We go deeper. And they will have to listen.

This is only the beginning.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Every major shift in history started with one moment. One act of defiance. One refusal to comply with a broken system.

This is that moment.

We are done waiting for politicians to fix what is broken.

We are done watching billionaires hoard wealth while the working class struggles.

We are done believing we are powerless.
The People’s Union also plans an Amazon Boycott from March 7 -14 and a Nestle boycott March 21-28.

February 28th is my 33rd wedding anniversary. Well technically it's the day before my anniversary but my anniversary is leap Day so the 28th is close enough this year. We have some plans so I'll just have to see where we might end up needing to spend money and try to participate in this. I wish it were possible to actually do something that would be meaningful against these corporations. This is a little something and at least better than nothing but they are so huge the impact will be negligible at best
But being a social movement it's worth it to participate.

Yup, would be amazing to see this catch fire. Congrats on your 33rd!

I hope they’re all registered and vote for Democrats next election. That would so more for their cause than this boycott. If we want to change our system then we’ve got to win elections and keep power for more than one election cycle. We need to pass legislation, change the judiciary, and keep power long enough to ensure long term change. We can’t pout and vote for a circus clown all because one of our pet issues didn’t get all the attention we thought it deserved.

Look at how repubs vote. They fall in line. And they stay in line no matter what. Democrats, want to fall in love then bail as soon as their candidate makes a mistake.

Yes, but voting is the bare minimum.

You need to do at least one more thing. Anything. Just one. Cancel your prime account, shop local only, go to your community council and city council meetings and speak, donate, just do SOMETHING.

Or don’t put Kamala as your option. You can thank your tribe’s overlords for that.

Also your tribe can join by advocating for more moderate/popular ideas and wants of the American people.

Or keep doing what you’re doing like:
Be snobby and look down on people
Run on far left crazy ideas
Fight against the wants of Americans
Keep calling all people who are not in your Tribe Nazi, Racists, MAGA, ect
Keep pushing Gender, Sex, Race on everything and everyone

You keep doing these things and your Tribes approvals will be in the 20’s soon, you will keep losing 1000’s of registered tribe members and you will continue to lose elections.

But Thriller, I don’t think you can acknowledge any of that. You will just blame it on everyone else but your Tribe. Keep saying eggs, AI and flashlights up asses and keep on losing. Might need some self reflection.

Will you be happy when Trump starts killing Americans to further his agenda? Will you just sit back and say "yep you DEI idiots get what you deserve"? What would actually make you take a moral stand for anything? Or is this completely reflective of your morals, things like working to destroy the foundation of our government, firing huge swaths of federal employees under false pretenses, destroying careers and lives of dedicated Americans in the process, passing tax cuts for the wealthy while undermining social programs millions of Americans rely on, and on and on? Do you actually stand for anything at all? I guess we already have that answer, you made us clear you completely support president Musk's agenda before. You have attached yourself to the tribe that wants to tear down America. Will you be carrying a machete of your own when the killing starts?

Hyperbole much?

If it means hurting the person or tribe he hates? Yes. If it means proving his loyalty to his own tribe? Yes. At some point over the last 10 years Buck and many others like him decided that being FOR anything didn’t matter. Persuasion didn’t matter. Winning in the marketplace of ideas didn’t matter. Appealing to one’s better angels didn’t matter. Striving to be inclusive, forging connections with others, and standing up for values didn’t matter so much as possessing power to inflict harm on whatever his tribe was against. You can see it in how he’ll label people like you a “leftist.” As if that term has any meaning anymore other than “being against Trump and Trump’s tribe.” Winning through Russian disinformation, coups, exploiting Ukraine, blowing up democratic norms, scapegoating minorities and immigrants, calling others vermin, and demagoguing others? All that matters is power.

So yes, when the radio tells him to kill liberals, absolutely he’ll be with the machete happy to prove loyalty to his tribe. It’ll make Buck Sexton and Travis happy. It’ll give Hannity a boner. It’ll be fun and entertaining to what is otherwise a pretty normal boring life. It’ll make the liberals cry. When the boxcars come, he’ll happily turn in his neighbor as long as his prior prejudices can be validated and he can make himself out to be a victim. The liberals deserved it after all with all their trans books, Black Lives Matter, and opinionated women! As long as he continues to drown himself in the media garbage he downs daily, there’s no cause for him to self-reflect. There’s no reason to make himself feel uncomfortable through looking around and seeing the billionaire fascists, nativist racists, anti vax kooks, pro Russian nuts, and otherwise despicable deplorable tribe he associates with. It’s just much easier to sit in the back of the room making farting noises with his armpits and laugh at liberals. Tee hee than to actually conduct a sincere self-reflection and debate topics in a principled manner.

It’s much easier for him to make himself out to be a victim and justify his ugly attitudes and actions than to admit that he’s changed over the last 10 years to throw his values out of the window. You know this is true as there’s no way he’d ever vote for a Democrat who’s done or said half the crap Trump has. Imagine his outrage if Harris had stayed a coup this year to stay in office.

Furthermore, he’s indicative of another segment of our society: men stuck in adolescence. Real men would understand that government should be re-evaluated periodically for efficiency. But they also know that taking a chainsaw to federal institutions and employees will likely do more harm than good. Real men know that principles and values are what anchors us; not worship of a cult or of a personality. Real men are thoughtful and understand that DEI programs can be overdone and trainers can be poor but ultimately fostering an inclusive environment where men, women, and minorities are given value and treated with respect, benefits all. Real men don’t follow Donald Trump. He’s a complete beta. He’s a wimp. Real men wouldn’t want Trump in a position of power to whine, bitch, and set poor examples for their children. Buck is indicative of a lot of men in today’s society who substitute real manhood for perpetual adolescence. He wants all the privileges of manhood without any of the responsibilities. Real men stand for something.

And I completely expect the drive by insult and justification of everything bad happening to the country on “leftists.” We all know it’s much easier for you to blame “the left” than call out your precious dear leader. We get it. I just hope that someday you widen your narrow view of who deserves respect and value in our society. If all you are is against a tribe, what a sad sorry way to live a life.

This is too good not to share. Trump is “the man” to all the many immature and adult adolescent men (and sexually frustrated ones) who get off on him saying and doing the things they wish they could. There’s freedom in acting your worst.

Gift article:

Why do working-class white men—the most reliable component of Donald Trump’s base—support someone who is, by their own standards, the least masculine man ever to hold the modern presidency? The question is not whether Trump fails to meet some archaic or idealized version of masculinity. The president’s inability to measure up to Marcus Aurelius or Omar Bradley is not the issue. Rather, the question is why so many of Trump’s working-class white male voters refuse to hold Trump to their own standards of masculinity—why they support a man who behaves more like a little boy…

Two researchers who looked back at the 2016 presidential election suggested that support for Trump was higher in areas where there were more internet searches for topics such as “erectile dysfunction,” “how to get girls,” and “penis enlargement” than in pro–Hillary Clinton areas of the country. (One can only hope that correlation is not causation.) The idea that insecure men support bullies and authoritarians is hardly new; recall that one of George Orwell’s characters in 1984 dismissed all the “marching up and down and cheering and waving flags” as “simply sex gone sour.” To reduce all of this to sexual inadequacy, however, is too facile. It cannot explain why millions of men look the other way when Trump acts in ways they would typically find shameful. Nor is arguing that Trump is a bad person and therefore that the people who support him are either brainwashed or also bad people helpful. He is, and some of them are. But that doesn’t explain why men who would normally ostracize someone like Trump continue to embrace him…

To be a man is to be an adult, to willingly decide, as Saint Paul wrote, to “put away childish things.” There’s a reason that Peter Pan is a story about a boy, and the syndrome named after it is about men. Not everyone grows up as they age.

It should not be a surprise then, that Trump is a hero to a culture in which so many men are already trapped in perpetual adolescence. And especially for men who feel like life might have passed them by, whose fondest memories are rooted somewhere in their own personal Wonder Years from elementary school until high-school graduation, Trump is a walking permission slip to shrug off the responsibilities of manhood.

The appeal to indulge in such hypocrisy must be enormous. Cheat on your wife? No problem. You can trade her in for a hot foreign model 20 years younger. Is being a father to your children too onerous a burden on your schedule? Let the mothers raise them. Money troubles? Everyone has them; just tell your father to write you another check. Upset that your town or your workplace has become more diverse? Get it off your chest: Rail about women and Mexicans and African Americans at will and dare anyone to contradict you.

I do not know how much of this can explain Trump’s base of support among working-class white women. (Those numbers are now declining.) But perhaps these women, too, regard Trump as just one more difficult and mischievous man-child in their lives to be accommodated and forgiven.

The best example of women giving him a pass was after the Access Hollywood tape came to light in the fall of 2016. Trump had been caught on audio bragging about being able to grope women because he was famous. Republican leaders panicked; surely this level of vulgarity, they reasoned, would kill Trump’s chances with female voters.

Instead, women showed up at rallies with shirts featuring arrows pointing right to where Trump could grab them…

I think that working men, the kind raised as I was, know what kind of “man” Trump is. And still, the gratification they get from seeing Trump enrage the rest of the country is enough to earn their indulgence. I doubt, however, that Trump gives them the same consideration. Perhaps Howard Stern, of all people, said it best: “The oddity in all of this is the people Trump despises most love him the most. The people who are voting for Trump for the most part … He’d be disgusted by them.” The tragedy is that they are not disgusted by him in return.

Escape from Freedom tells the same tale. Nazis and Communists both found an escape from responsibility and freedom in rebelling against cultural norms. There’s freedom and excitement in cheering for and playing for “the bad team.” MAGA, which includes many Nazis, is no different. They like yelling at Costco workers, indulging in conspiracy, treating librarians like trash, making circuses of town hall and school board meetings, saying awful things about immigrants and minorities, and breaking rules and laws for their own tribe. It’s why they love Trump. He is their retribution against responsibility, decency, and attempting to be better.

Our trolls including folks like Buck get off on giving the finger to our better angels.
