Favors reminds me of Shaq

Lots of wishful thinking from Jazz fans.

Here's the closest comparison via NBA professional scouts.

Favors size, strength, skillset and game at his age is most like Antonio McDyess.

Sorry. He's no Malone (plus he sat out for a cold! Do you remember that?)

This came from a David Locke interview with an NBA scout. David Locke (the homer he is) was priming the scout and pretty much pleading with him to say that Favors was like a rookie Howard. The scout said he is very simliar to McDyess.

Personally, I wish I hadn't heard the interview. I've spent the last month trying to forget it and forget the fact that he sat out for a freeking cold!!!

In McDyess' best years before he got injured, he was averaging 21, 11, and 2. This was, in my opinion, not his ceiling, either, but his catastrophic knee injury kept him from getting higher.

A two inch taller, 25-35 pound heavier McDyess is NOT a bad thing.

That's not a terrible comparison. Alot of people forget how good McDyess was. As Hubie Brown would say: "You're talking an ath-a-letic power forward who not only gets you 20&10 each night, but also shoots the solid percentange. On top of that, he gets you 2 blocks each night, so you're talking about an extrem-a-ly good all-around player."

McDyess injured his knee, came back to soon, and re-injured his knee, and suddenly his explosiveness and all-star ability was gone. I think Favors has an advantage because in McDyess' prime, not only was the PF postion much more stacked in the NBA, it was difficult to have lean, athletic 6-10 guys playing center. You had to have more bulk in those days to play the pivot - and while Favors still needs to get stronger, it's much more feasible for him to play both the 4 & 5 - which really increases his upside.

Shaq also had 3 inches and about 50lbs on Favors coming into the NBA

No kidding! Shaq makes everyone - everyone - look small and always did. And they were small compared to him and he used that bulk and size to tremendous advantage.

Favors looked small guarding bynum last week, so no, he is no shaq. Another pre-injury McDyess would be great.

I revisited the interview. I'm a little more positive now. Also, great comments.

Locked on Jazz Podcast (Episode 37) - Who is Derek Favors?- David Locke talks with Utah Jazz Director of Player Personal Walt Perrin and NBA Draft guru Jonathan Givony from NBA Draft Express

https://1320kfan.com/index.php/audio/listen/locked_on_jazz_podcast_episode_37_who_is_derek_favors

Givony- "i'd be pretty excited if I were a Jazz fan"
-youngest player in the NBA
-prototype of what the NBA looks for in a big man
-19
-6'10 in shoes
-7'4 wing span
-9'2 standing reach
-runs really well
-body of 19 yr old, will fill out in 2 to 3 years (think of how Howard looked at age 18)
-will be good at 4 next to Jefferson, and 5 and w/ Millsap
-allready top 10 offensive rebounder in NBA (at age 19)
-arguably the best pick in the draft, some put him in front of Wall
- Very quiet and shy. High quality individual. Hard worker. Family oriented. Doesn't have an entourage.

Locke-
A scout said "A human rocket. Huge upside, understand defensive concepts at an early age. Offense needs to improve"

Givony- "I think thats perfect"

Locke- Who is Favors physcially equivalent to in comparison to other players you've looked at?
Givony- "Antonio McDyess in his prime... Before his knee injuries. I don't want to say Dwight Howard cause that puts a little too much pressure on the guy..." He went on to explain this was exciting because the toughest position to find is the big man, and Favors does it perfectly. People say PG is the toughest, but the NBA is saturated with PG's.

then Givony goes on to say that this years draft really sucks!

I've heard everything from Tyrus Thomas(who had incredible upside but was raw) to Shawn Kemp(amazing finishing ability at the hoop). I think he'll be a mix of those two. I don't think he'll ever be a dominate scorer like Kemp, he's got a long ways to go offensively, but he will be a solid all around player with great ability to score around the rim.

or maybe he will become kemp i don't know, you look at the rookie numbers side by side and they are almost identical. and favors is 19, kemp was 20. of course kemp's game was more based on quickness/speed, i don't know if i've seen favors speed displayed much.

He already can't shoot free throws.

If after nearly 2 decades of dominance and 4 NBA titles he can become fat, slow, and oft injured as much as he likes.

How's Andrei's career going?

Andre is neither fat nor slow. Comparison moot.

Oh but he does suck though.

For failing to get the joke

Apparently some moron neg repper (anonymous of course, cowards) does not recognize a tongue in cheek response when he sees one.

Remember a sense of humor does not have to be shown with broad grins and loud guffaws as if you were a redneck dude watching your boyfriend defile Ned Beatty.

Kemp was never a dominant scorer. He has always been too foul prone to stay on the floor.

He wasn't consistently a dominant scorer because - in his prime - he didn't look to be one, but he was still one of the most effective offensive PF's in the league.

Not Shaq. Favors' body, leaping, and athleticism reminds me of Roy Tarpley. Had Tarpley stayed clean, he might have been an all star, multiple times. He played Karl Malone better than anyone early in Malone's career because Tarpley was just as strong, just as fast, but taller. That's who Favors reminds me of.

I'm not sure if the Antonio or Amare comparisons hold much water. Neither seem to have much of a back to the basket game.

Consider Amare received 1000+ more minutes of development time his rookie season as well and was a year older and I actually think those numbers look good for Favors (although the foul rate is troublesome).

Favors has actually come the longest way among all NBA rookies this season. He had some games in summer league where he looked totally hapless.

Anyone else remember this: https://www.nba.com/summerleague/games/20100708/UTANJN/gameinfo.html

6 points, 7 turnovers, 5 fouls. Ouch.

From pre-season until now, I would make the case that Hayward has easily come the longest. Dude was a hapless, spastic turd out there until February.

And to the OP, easy buddy. Slow down.
