Payne is actually quite a bit taller, but Trey was wearing a thicker shoes.

Understand. But if he can really shoot it and put the ball on the floor.. And is 7'3, I just might risk it.

He can shoot... he shoots coming off screens and on the move, he does turnaround jumpers... and even banks them off the glass. He can shoot. I'm not certain he'd be able to put it consistently on the floor though... maybe 1 or 2 dribbles and going to the rack would be comfortable for him...

I'm not saying he will be Trey(although to be fair I posed the question earlier if he'd be Trey 2.0), but I'm saying he will have very similar issues with finishing in the lane and around the rim. That's almost a certainty. His success would depend heavily on his ability to knock down shots. And he hasn't shown an ability in college better than what Trey was showing in a better conference against much better competition and on a much bigger stage.

I personally would rather pick Jamal Murray or Kris Dunn next year than Payne this year. I'd give Trey one more year to see what he can do and if he can improve. If he still sucks... prepare for letting him go and either pick up a vet or pick one of the two I mentioned.

I just think with the Jazz overabundance of depth there's no need to take a wait and see approach with the entire PG position, its time to obviate a weak-link in the chain. Why hope to save face over past trade value? when you can cut ties, upgrade and move on at little cost.

A spark of reliable offense from PG position just seems like one of those things that could tip the scales for this team. With Trey thats something you've gotta wait to see improvement on, then he's gotta confirm it with consistency. With Payne there's a chance he can 'hit the ground running' in limited minutes, and you have a dynamic backup PG, capable of really changing the pace, on a rookie deal for 4 seasons. I'd be remissed not to mention that he could very well turn out to be the BPA at 12.

Bryce Cotton and Dante can be relied on IMO. let Bryce and Payne fight it out for the backup spot in camp and see what happens. There is downside risk holding onto Trey if those percentages remain where they've been, as right now he could still fetch back a decent asset. With Dante here whats the real risk in losing Trey anyway. It seems like a pride thing.
