Following Potential 2026 Draftees

The Jazz have been playing him at the 3 for three years, whether it's next to John Collins or Kyle Filipowski.
They’ve also principally been trying to lose this whole time, and, wait for it, have had far too many 4s this entire time.

They mostly have done away with those inane lineups this year. In any event, a player’s best position is the one they guard. Lauri is a 4. It’s the one position we have most figured out.

The last thing in the world we need to do is go back to having too many 4s.

Ya I think Lauri should be our starting power forward

The most important function of a modern NBA 4 is to stand in the corner and space the floor. It's not 2005 anymore. The paint-centric, baseline-roaming, hard-rebounding, 6'9'' "power forward" type is mostly gone. Centers are directly involved in pick and rolls, not 4's.

Obviously, Lauri is much too good and versatile for that type of passive spacing role. He's one of the most lethal off-ball perimeter scorers in the league. If you're trying to win, you use him there. In fact, it's bizarre to suggest that the reason we've played Lauri on the perimeter as a so-called 3 is because we've been trying to lose. He's made himself into an elite scorer there.

Lauri isn't a pure 3, if such a thing even exists. His ballhandling is basic and he can't guard the quicker SF's. But that's just one side of the coin. The other is that he's a true matchup nightmare, particularly these days, as he's finally learned to bully smaller defenders with his size and strength.

Anyway, 3 and 4 are often very interchangeable roles these days.

The Jazz's offense has no difference between the 3 and 4.

I do think we could use another big athlete 4 sized player, but it's far from the biggest weakness. The biggest weakness is not having defensive players who can shoot.

Sober's Scientifically Superior Scouting Reports:

(Grades are relative to expectations for their position)

Darryn Peterson:

- Shooting: B+
- Scoring: A
- Playmaking: C
- On Ball Defense: A
- Off Ball Defense: B+

Peterson has been billed as a combo guard, but I think he is more of a wing. His individual scoring is extremely impressive, but I haven't seen him create for others much. He is an extremely effective defender without even trying that hard.

AJ Dybantsa:

- Shooting: C+
- Scoring: A
- Playmaking: A -
- On Ball Defense: B+
- Off Ball Defense: C+

AJs life will get harder in the NBA where it is more difficult to score without a reliable shot, but if the shot develops, he has everything you want in an offensive weapon. He is an extremely fluid athlete that makes everything look easy. He has great defensive potential, but his defensive awareness is lacking and needs to improve.

Cam Boozer

- Shooting: A -
- Scoring: A -
- Playmaking: A
- On Ball Defense: B -
- Off Ball Defense: B -

Cam is an extremely skilled and smart big who is capable of using his size effectively inside while also playing out on the perimeter. His defense at the NCAA level has been mostly good, especially when he locks in at the end of close games. However, questions about his lateral quickness and lack of rim protection are valid concerns at the next level.

Wild overrating of Cam's scoring. The fact that he can get by in college with his below-the-rim game by just bullying weaker people out of the way and flipping tough floaters over them doesn't mean that he's a great scorer.

That stuff will NOT work in the NBA. No pro team will think that giving Cam Boozer the ball in the low post is a great offensive option.

Same goes for defense. Cam should fall out of the top 5 and it's not totally out of the question it will happen.

The position you play is the position you guard. I only want Lauri assigned to 4s.
