What's new

Game Thread? OKC vs. Utah

Explanations/excuses are running out of gas.
Ugly performances piling up.
Coaching staff lost, reactionless.
Players don't gel and don't share.
Frustration taking over.
Other teams looking good, better than Jazz.
That's it right now.
Hope our dudes turn it around but... probably won't happen with coaching staff/brass stalled, iced.

What a s***** day. I had a crown and post fall out this morning while brushing my teeth, work was horrible, then the Jazz come out with no energy and get played off their own court by a tired below .500 team. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

There's a part of me that still wants to see a Bradley/Davis/Green bench frontcourt instead of Davis/Green/Niang. I get the spacing issue you would have with Bradley and Davis on the floor together. But Bradley is more active than Niang. At the very least we would have a size advantage. We'd win the bench rebounding battle. Bradley would get us some easy baskets. Defense would be pretty good in the paint. As opposed to Davis/Green/Niang which doesn't give us an advantage of any kind.

Hmm. Well a few thoughts.

If you were to ask yourself what kind of coach is Quin, we know the answer, he's a defensive coach who's not that great on offense.

What we did in the off-season was we gained a lot of offensive scoring talent, but what took a massive hit was the defense of this team, and especially defensive IQ which is absolutely abysmal with some of these offensive players we have acquired. So we might have handicapped our coach who is defensive-minded, but given him all this offensive talent, of which he doesn't exactly know how to get the most out of.

Some of the things I'm seeing on the defensive end are truly mind-blowing. There is no doubt that Quin has some key performances indicators that have been established within the team, and are probably a permanent fixture on the whiteboard of every game. The players just aren't responding, or are incapable of responding to, especially on the defensive end. The 'falling asleep' on the defensive end is staggering.

Derrick Favors was a high defensive IQ guy, Jae was okay, Ricky was a high IQ guy on defense but didn't have the footspeed for some of the quicker guards. You felt like there was a big understanding on the defensive end last year, and a decent understanding on offense. This year, there is no real understanding, and the only chemistry on display is Joe/Rudy. We've also simplified the offensive sets for the new guys, and it's looking like a$$. Have we really handicapped our coach that much?
Well thought out and quite possibly exactly on point. Unfortunately gives little hope of getting back on track with this team as currently constructed with our particular coaching staff

No one's expecting a G-leaguer to come in and save the team, but the guys we're playing off the bench right now--Mudiay, Niang, Davis, etc. are no better than our G-league players.
Mudiay/Green ain't no G-league players. both are just second unit materials at best. but simply due to the incompetency of our staring 1 & 4, we are asking too much out of them

I've said it before and I know it's not a popular idea and probably would never happen but maybe bring Bogey off of the bench and allow him to play more freely. I think he could be a Lou Williams type 18+ ppg 15+ shots per game player.

Thinking about it if Quin is so damn gung ho about Niang and spacing then why aren't we playing Bradley/Green/Niang as the bench frontcourt instead of Davis/Green/Niang? Why are we spacing the floor for Davis when he's not a finisher like that? Davis is a better overall player than Bradley IMO. But Bradley makes more sense in that role because he's got good hands and can finish around the rim. At least then the spacing would matter for something.

Mudiay is shooting 30% from 3-pt and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.3. He got dumped by the Knicks after last season, and, quite frankly, he's barely holding on to a spot in the league.

Jeff Green averages 2.8 rebs per game in over 19 mins of game time, and he only plays spotty defense. There's a reason he's a minimum-contract player.

The starters aren't the problem. Their +/- has been positive, even through the losing streak.
