headband ban stands

I think they make players look goofy. More like they're going to play at Rucker Park as opposed to a professional league. Did you ever seen Kobe, Jordan, Magic, Stockton, or Malone wearing rediculous headbands? Makes them look like they should be playing in the Busch leagues.
Cliff Robinson, Slick Watts, Chamberlain. They sure were just out there displaying themselves as "Rucker park" material. Absurd comment.

you don't get involved in the act of sweating much do you? Or you live up to your name, One Brow and have one mean looking Uni Brow. Eyebrows aren't going to keep sweat from getting in your eyes.

Back when I went folk-dancing, I used to bring three-four extra shrits because I soaked them so thoroughly. But then, I was out of shape, so I sweated quite a bit. I sweated that much as basketball, as well, but never bothered to change shirts.

However, I don't think anyhting in my post qualified as an absolute statement that no sweat would ever reach your eyes. I was just noting the difference in utility between headbands and wristbands.

I like it. The players that get most upset about the rule are the ones who need it the most. IMO it's not so much about headbands, but about doing what your told even if you think it's stupid. Trust and respect your elders.

I think that doing what you're told even if you think its stupid is one of the worst reasons to do anything. (Assuming, that is, you are an adult.) It's this kind of philosophy that is a recipe for abuse and manipulation, and it is what those who seek power over us would want us to believe.

I am happy to trust and respect my elders, provided that they do something to earn that trust and respect.

BTW, I don't really care that much one way or another about the headband ban. It probably as much as anything initially reflected Sloan's 'old school' view of the world, which is one way to view the world, not necessarily the correct way in any particular case. (I find the knee jerk reverence some give to something because it's 'old school' to be silly.)

It may just be me but youu come off as soemone looking for a fight. Nothing here is that serious.

I don't think anyone is disputing that they can't have a dress code policy or they can't ban headbands. I just want to know the rationale behind it. I've heard all the theories, but most of them don't hold up to me since there seem to be inconsistencies with them.

it doesn't really need to have any rationale behind it. I had a few jobs where in order to wear "casual" everyday of the week you had to pay them an extra 5 dollars. I refused even though they didn't really "care" about the dress code they just wanted to charge workers.

The rationale is that the term uniform means exactly that...uniform. If the players want to make headbands a mandatory part of the uniform, they can. If you sweat so much you can't deal with it, rub vaseline in your eyebrows.

Why is it SO important to stand out and be different that you can't set it aside for 2 hour, 3-4 times a week?

The eyebrows/ridges direct sweat away from the eyes, the hands have no such construction.

Hmmm, interesting, I had never thought of that. So, I wonder whether the eyebrow and eyebrow ridge is an evolutionary response to minimizing getting sweat in the eyes? Any biologists here who have an answer? (Also out of curiosity, what other mammals sweat out of their skin?)

That said, the eyebrows and ridges are an imperfect screen at best, particularly if one's hair extends over the eyebrow, or when sweat from skin near the eye and on the side of the face by the eye flows toward the eye or is directed that way by movement of the head.

. . . which might come in handy for post-game activities also <<ducking>>.

I have some breaking news for everyone here:

Sometimes you sweat a lot and the sweat doesn't stay out of your eyes. There's equipment that the league allows to help deal with that. Yes, the same league that won't let Dwyane Wade wear a band-aid under his eye because he thinks it looks cool.

Every time I play basketball, I have to wear a headband to keep the sweat out of my eyes. Especially since having PRK surgery.

If I was the coach I would let them wear headbands. Since I am not the coach I am content to let the coach decide. He decided to not allow headbans. Good enough for me. Not worth arguing/debating over.

...yeah, when that eyebrow less monkey was being chased by that lion along time ago....he started to sweat profusely! Within weeks he "evolved" eyebrows....to protect him from the next attack!

Humans didn't evolve from monkeys. (Although I admit in your case I can see why someone might assume that.)

No no no. The way it happened was a neanderthal (pronounced knee-and-er-tall) with a pronounced ridge and eyebrow was fighting for a mate with another neanderthal with no real brow and a relatively smooth forehead, more like a modern man. Then of course the one with the brow and ridge won, since the other one got sweat in his eyes, so the browed wonder was allowed to mate, which is why all humans now have pronounced ridges and eyebrows.
