How to build a championship

I have been doing some reading about what it takes to build a champion. I was going to post the article but my iPad is being a pain in the back side. So here are my opinions on how to build a championship.

I agree with the article that a team needs to be 8 1/2 players deep. Now 9 thru 12 are still important but 1 thru 9 are what a championship is built on.

1st - a team has to have a dynamic scorer. Some one that can take the team on their shoulders. Kobe, pierce, durant, James, wade. These types of scorers. These are also very hard to come by. not sure who on the jazz will take this lead. It was Williams but he is gone. Figure some one that is first or second all NBA.

2nd - a defensive stopper. this is the person that will frustrate the other teams best scorer. Disrupt their offense just makes things a nightmare. These players can get steals or block shots. Think bowen, Pippen, artest. Again not sure who this guy is. This is the reason I want biyombo he can be that for us.

3rd - a sixth man. This is a versital player that comes in off the bench. He can play multiple positions. He will generally get starters minutes. The is the jack of all trades. Think odom, Ginobili, kukoc, Gordon. I think the perfect player on the jazz roster to play this part is Hayward. I think he can be a starter but he does so much and is so versatile.

4th - a point guard that runs your system. As it has been stated many times great point guards aren't as important to win it all as a good point guard that runs your system. This player, in my opinion lives by the motto make everyone better. Think fisher, Kidd, rondo. I am not sold on Harris here I think Watson is a better fit. I will give Harris 1 more year.

5th - specialists. The first specialist is the 3 point shoot some one that can spread the floor and make other teams pay for doubling. Think korver, miller, Bowen, battier. The league has plenty. I was hoping this would be cj but we dont have one. The second is a rebounder. This person can come in and just flat outbrebound. Think rodman, Evans, haslam. I really thought millsap was our guy here but he hasn't been very good.

6th - inside presence. This is a person that you can throw the ball inside and the can score down low. Get to the free throw line. Makes playing half court offense bearable. Think gasol, Garnett, bosh. I think Jefferson is a good fit here as could be favors.

7th - coach. This is some one that can manage a game. Make good substitutions. Create match up problems. Exploit weaknesses. Most importantly they have the respect of the players. Scott Brooks, Johnson, Sloan, Carlisle. Not sure what to think of in Corbin will also give him 1 more year.

8th - great fans. This is probably one of the biggest. It makes the players play better. It provides energy. Home court advantage is huge. I think esa is one of the best for this.

1/2 - dynamic duos. For every batman there has to be a robin. For evey Kirk a spock. Think Kobe - gasol, Duncan- Robinson, Jordan - pippen, pierce - garnet, stockton - malone. This is an identity the jazz lack.

Now players can have multiple parts to this equation. Kobe is alsoma great defender as was Jordan. Add more tell me how stupid I am doesn't matter just want to hear what you all think.

I think you have included too many basketball cliches. This thread will now implode.

Seriously we if had a big time point guard, another wing scorer and a better wing defender we would be a very good team.

Maybe Harris can be a good enough point guard next to Hayward. Maybe Bell will give us enough of a stopper.

Good post. I think in reality a championship teams needs all the elements you listed, and I remember the article you're referring to. However, I think the real contenders have 3 - 4 all-star or near all-star caliber players that play the lion's share of minutes and each of those player's covers more than one of those important roles.

Players like Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwan, Tim Duncan and Shaq could change a game at both ends of the floor. Karl Malone and John Stockton could too to a lesser degree. I think the Jazz are hoping and expecting that Derrick Favors can become a dominant inside scorer, a go-to player on offense, and a reliable rebounder and defender as well.

All contending teams have solid interior defense and rebounding. This is an absolute must, and it separates teams with offensive talent--like the Clippers, the Warriors, the Suns, etc.--from the teams that can really contend. The Jazz are still in the process of putting this together while they recover from the Boozer/Okur era, but Derrick Favors and Al Jefferson are a good start. Add a player like Kanter or Biyombo from this year's draft, and the Jazz's front-court would be in good shape. (Actually, I think this is why the Jazz have shown a bit of interest in Robin Lopez, but I'm not sure he's the solution.)

All contending teams have solid outside shooters on the wings. Gordon Hayward looks to be becoming a reliable outside shooter. AK, CJ and Millsap are a bit streaky, but when they're on, the Jazz are tougher to beat. The Jazz realistically need a starting SF who is a reliable shooter from mid-range and 3pt. range. Maybe that's Millsap. Maybe that's a player like Terrence Jones or Jan Vesely in this draft. Derrick Williams of course would be great. Harrison Barnes fit that description too, but oh well...

All contending teams need to have at least one, but preferably two players who can break down a defense and generate scoring opportunities or fouls on drives. This is the Derrick Rose, the Rondo, the Kobe, the Westbrook, the Parker/Ginobili... These guys have to get past the defense and get into the lane at will. Usually this is a point guard or scoring wing. Devin Harris is okay at this, but not as versatile when he gets in the paint. Hayward showed flashes of this at the end of the year. A player like Brandon Knight could be quite good at this if he tightens his handle just a bit.

And finally, a contending team needs at least one, but preferably two of the above players who flat out create mismatches that torture the other team. So far Derrick Favors has that potential. Hayward's versatility could pay off in some match-ups. But this is where it would be great to have a Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams. The other players in this draft who could create mismatches are Jan Vesely and Donatas Montiejunas, but I worry a bit about Donatas' quickness and energy.

So to sum up, start with Derrick Favors and Al Jefferson, but add a C who likes to rebound and defend at a minimum, and can score as well if possible. (Kanter/Biyombo)

Add an SF alongside Gordon Hayward who can score from mid-range and long range and create mismatches if possible. (Derrick Williams/Terrence Jones/Jan Vesely)

And add a guard who can break down defenses and score and dish in the lane. (Kyrie Irving/Brandon Knight/maybe Kemba Walker).

The Jazz teams of the late 90's had all of these "ingredients", but we never won a championship.
You have to add to this list: Make sure the opposing team doesn't have the greatest player in NBA History on their team.

9th - Refs who will call each game fairly and not disallow 3's with time on the clock and push-offs with the game on the line.

Trading D.Will for 4 lottery picks might turn out to be as great as the Lakers' trade for Pau Gasol.

We need a coach though.

1. Have the best players.

If the Heat win it all this year, you'll be right. Having the best players is a huge chunk of it, but those best players have to play well together and be on the same page.

The other big piece we're missing: Moving the team to a big city. Of course I don't really want that, but it is kind of true.

I think you can build a championship team with out being in a big market. The jazz could make a few moves and be a play off team in 2 years. Get some good young talent in the draft for the next 2 years. Make a trade or 2. Look at some aging talent that is looking for one last whoorah.

Examples:

Young talent

Hayward for starters
Biyombo ( great defender )
Jimmer great bench scorer specialist
Gilchrist, rivers ( going with NBA drafts rankings for next year)
Or a trade for a player like Flynn or Brandon rush

Players in their prime

Granger
Iguadala
Kaman
Josh smith

Aging vets

Antwan Jamison
Stephen Jackson
Caron butler

Just to name a few.

If I can build a championship team in NBA2K11, then the Jazz can do it.
It's not like it's Rocket Surgery.

Really?

Get a lot of good players on one team

This. Maybe even some great ones and a good coach. Then you have to win lots of games. Typically, the team that wins the most games in the playoffs wins the championship, so I say just win the most games in the playoffs.

That is Occam's Razor right there.
