It's awesome offence.

So Mo got caught on a pick and neither Gordon or Al (who had to worry about his man getting the pass off from Westbrook) could stop Westbrook, who is top 3 athletic point guards in the entire NBA.

WAaaaaah.

Can't do much about that

IO know they are good, and the jazz d lacks effort but westbrook never should have been able to turn the corner. once he got in the paint it was over. but hawyard offered some very weak help D... i hate how we just flash out to the ball handler..

That is a killer play for OKC.

Durrant comes quickly up to set the screen, the screen is set below the 3pt line instead of above it like many in NBA, and westbrook is already moving to the screen before Durrant is even set. The two 3pt shooters are set at the corners waiting to see if Foye or Milsap committ , Ibaka waits to see if Al challenges the shot or steps up to gaurd Durrant who is rolling down the lane then Ibaka charges the rim from the baseline for the rebound.

I wonder what would have happened had Hayward switched onto Westbrook? Foul on Hayward? Durrant for 3 over Mo Williams?

Westbrook is amazing on that play. Look how far back he is when he decides to dunk it. Very quick decision and amazing athletic ability.

the same as an arm tackle in football. both are useless. Hayward needs to stop the ball before rotating back

i agree. that is where the d broke down.. i hate when the bigs and forwards just flash out instead of coming out and confronting. even if durrant would have got the ball of the pick. a jump shot is lower percentage shot then a dunk.

plus a dunk is a momentum changer

I bet they looked at film and knew that the Jazz only flash out and used it against the team. Tricks like that only work for hte first few games of the season before teams figure them out.

Thats a corbin defensive play i guess... cause he never learns new tricks.

All of this. Except Big Al truly is awful at protecting the rim. Too bad he didn't get posterized here.

Hayward playing ****ty help D

and more importantly, Foye pretending like he's gonna do something. If he's gonna cave in like that, at least box out perkins while Jefferson tries to block Westbrook.

I'd like to see the whole play to watch how they set Hayward up. He had a long way to run & ended up overrunning it as a shot in the dark at slowing down Westbrook. Notice how he slides to stop and get back on Durant?

This play also only works for a dunk with a handful of players in the NBA. OKC ran it perfectly and happens to have a guy quick enough and who can throw it down over 7 footers. TP, CP3, most guards would have tear dropped or stepped back, either would be more guardable by Jeffy and potentially blocked by Favors.

Foye made the correct rotation read toward rolling KD (which would have been worthless anyway) while remaining position to guard the corner three. Boxing out Perkins is the last thing the Jazz needed there.

I like how Sap takes a step towards the rim and just freezes and gets a good look at the dunk...It was a great dunk.

thanks for commenting frank. you really do bring a great perspective an knowledge to basketball realted discussions.

holy crap that is the most defense i seen al play all season.
he did try to attempt to block it.
leaving the floor contesting the shot. only thing wrong with it is at the end he withdrew his arms afraid to foul.

good defense by al, better offense by westbrook

I think al just got in the air and became scared... thus tucking his arms in like a wi littal girl.

Generally you would prefer to go under Westbrook in high screen-roll but because the screen was set so low, there has to be better awareness that the pick is coming so Mo can fight over it at the 18-foot level. Since Al isn't a center who can defend above the rim - he needs to meet Westbrook outside the circle. So to summarize - poor initial recognition the screen was coming and then help-defense was late - Westbrook too fast/Al too slow. You have to be pretty good defensively to stop that and the Jazz certainly aren't.

Would that change if it wasn't a dunk but a one handed runner or tear-drop or floater (whatever) from a smaller gaurd ? Because in that scenarios there is a chance the shot is a miss and Perkins is now a threat on the rebound while the corner 3 threat is momentarily nullified.

I think Saps duty in that set-up is to show help at the rim but realize his primary responsibility is the strong side corner three. By showing help he hopes to get Westbrook to hesitate or even make the pass while Milsap is still in a position to get out to the shooter. Harden did neither, and committed to the dunk very quickly. Had Milsap stayed, Harden would have dunked on him.

With those same players for both teams OKC could run that play 20 times in a row and probably score close to 30 points.
