He basically says Gobert isn’t a top five defender because he can’t guard 1-5.

not really a big deal - Rudy is number 1 inside the paint (where the basket is)... I wouldn't want Rudy gaurding anyone outside the paint though, so if Simmons is looking at it from a point of view of all round defensive game (paint to arc) he's right. Same as if people were asked who is top 5 offensive player Simmons wouldn't register due to his lack of mid to long shooting.

This is one of those context things.

For an 82 game regular season, Gobert is no doubt a top 5 even top 3 NBA defender.

For the playoffs, Simmons is probably right. Guys like Kawhi, Giannis, Butler, and even LeBron have more of a defensive impact due to their ability to guard all 5 positions. The lack of post up big men coupled with the huge number of quick players with range make Gobert less effective.
