What's new

Jazz back in talks with Josh Howard

My first thought is: Dang, I guess my boy Ahearn isn't coming back.

Second thought is: See ya later Burks. Hope you and Big Al love Atlanta (or Philly, Charlotte, Sacramento, Houston......)

Third thought is: I wonder why KOC waited until after all his big offseason moves to higher Mr. Analytics? And what does Mr. Analytics think of Big Al and last years draft?

Third: from the end of the season until now, there hasn't been time to hire a new guy, bring him in, and expect him to keep the ball rolling. From now until training camp, other than crappy vets looking for jobs (CJ/Howard) what else is there to do? No draft, no trades, all the good players have signed with teams.

unless you think they'll trade sap and give marvin extra minutes at the 4. i just don't see it.
Yeah, this.

Think about it, Millsap is very likely turning down the offer they gave him, which was probably about the most that they would sign him for, so apparantly his is too overpriced for the team. As such they will likely go deron on him and trade his one year deal for something of value (draft picks) and use Marvin at the 4 more (and Evans, don't forget Evans).

Edit: there almost has to be a roster move of some sort in the works because the Jazz are at 15 i think with the draft pick, (whom they like) and even if they waive Raja, they like to keep a spot open for security reasons.

Somebody is gonna get axed if we really re-sign Howard. All I remember from Howard was a commentator (forgot which one) stating that "He runs the floor well." How mediocre do you have to be for running the floor to be thrown on your resume.

However, if he only plays a few minutes I am okay with that. Even though I think I would rather have Carrol getting those minutes.

Huh? The offer they gave Millsap was the MAX they could tender under the terms of the new CBA. Even if Millsap were the BEST PF in the league, that was the MAXIMUM they could offer. Of course he'll turn it down. He's worth more both in terms of contract length and $ per season. Even IF the Jazz plan on keeping Paul, they expect him to reject the offer and will (or already are) talking to him about the total amount and years they'll offer next summer.

I can go either way on Josh Howard. When he was healthy, he actually played quite well. The problem is that he wasn't healthy very often and we kept playing him when wasn't ready to play. If Corbin isn't prepared to bench him when he plays poorly, I agree with those who think we should pass on him.

Now that I've thought about it, I'm totally on board with signing Howard. JAzz FO is setting Corbin up to fail. Play the vets and Ty will be criticized for not developing the "future" of the Jazz. Play the youngsters and Ty will incur the wrath of the vets and any discord will be blamed on Corbin.

Mo (28), Tinsley (5), Watson (5), Burks (5), Foye (5)
Hayward (21), Burks (17), Foye (9)
Williams (25), Hayward (8), Howard (6), Carroll (6), Millsap (4)
Millsap (25), Favors (19), Evans (4)
Jefferson (27), Favors (10), Kanter (11)

You forgot to include mins for Roger Braille.

Maybe there's an NBA program where they are trying to help the less talented and underprivileged players get on teams and get minutes? I think the Jazz are just doing their part.

KOC denies the Jazz are in talks with Geritol as a jersey sponsor.

Actually there is, sort of. I believe the league picks up the tab for a large portion of the veteran minimum contracts.

If we are going to sign a washed up vet who is declining I would rather sign Tracy McGrady over Howard.

McGrady over the last few seasons in limited minutes at least shot decent from 3 and decent from the field. He at least can pass more than Howard. I don't even like McGrady but he is better than Howard. Maybe not defensively but offensively he is.

I don't understand the signing at all if it happens unless we are about to make a trade.

Matt Barnes is also another option.

I don't mind the signing if there is a trade in the works. But signing a vet to take time away from Burks, Williams, Foye or Hayward is not smart. All of those guys are head and shoulders above Howard in talent and basketball IQ.

I'd rather sign K. Murphy. He showed some skills in the summer league and he won't complain if he doesn't play. I liked Howard at the beginning but he is not the same player he use to be. It is time to move on with guys like this, washed up and at the end of his career.

I have no problem with the Jazz going after Howard. He's a proven winner.

So if Jazz sign Howard do they have something else up their sleeve?
Seems like they will max out contracts if they do sign K Murphy etc.

Only if the contract is for one year or less, then the league pays everything above the minimum salary for a two-year veteran. So it isn't a "large portion", only about a third at most.

I think what this actually means is that no one else wants Howard. Kind of like all the teams that our man Braille was supposedly pursuing, only to find out there is ZERO interest around the league.
