Jazz @ Cavs 12/16/17

Back-to-back, without two starters and only 5 points down with less than 5 mins to go. I wouldn't call it a "moral victory" but the Jazz certainly fought hard. Can't be upset about splitting the Celtics/Cavs games. Pretty happy it wasn't the other way around (win over Cavs, but lose to Boston).
I'm not old enough to remember the rookie seasons of Stockton or Malone. Any of you grandpas out there who can comment on their rookie seasons. Was the fan base this crazed? Or were either this exciting?

I know that both were good enough that they moved two all stars aside to give them playing time. It's not like the Jazz were a haven for all-stars either. It did take Stockton three years to finally start.

Stock backed up a very good Ricky Green. He produced from day one, but became a much better shooter after his rookie year.

I'm giddy as to what improvements he can make in the offseason if he's learning and applying things so quick during the season

Nothing to really complain about. The Jazz played hard on a B2B without their two best bigs. This felt like in a penciled in loss when the schedule came out to be honest.

Stockton's rookie season: 18 mins, averaged 5.9 pts on 47%/18%. Took John 5 years to develop a reliable 3PT shot. I know, different era and Sloan was probably the last coach in the league to acknowledge that 3's could be good shots.

DM's only peer as a Jazz rookie is Darrell Griffith. Dantley averaged 20+ too his 1st season, but he wasn't with the Jazz his rookie year.

If DM ends up averaging >20 pts/per, the ROY voting will be interesting.

I could tell he was going to be great after that first summer league when he got in the passing lane, deflected the ball out ahead and ran the length of the court to get it before it went out of bounds and in one motion whipped it behind the back perfectly to Dante who had run the floor and was under the basket for an open dunk. That was one of the most amazing plays I had ever seen.

Very early on, I told people here he would challenge Simmons for rookie of the year and people thought I was crazy. And then people got on my case because they said I wasn't the only one enthusiastic about him. People even negged me, including old Archibald, who said he couldn't shoot and Cy who said he couldn't jump off one leg, and some even said he wasn't very athletic -- Jesus H he was getting his head even with the rim during summer league, not athletic?

Dude I think people think you're crazy for other reasons...

But the kid stay in the picture! he's been fantastic.

Stockton played behind Ricky Green (another great Jazz point guard) his rookie year. As rookies, Stockton and Mitchell had/have the same desire to never repeat a mistake. I remember one play in particular that impressed me with John:

Stockton wasn't being respected by the defense and was left open for a 15-foot shot. He thought about shooting it, then passed the ball out; the clock ran down and someone had to shoot a poor, desperation shot that missed. A few plays later, the defense again left him open for the same, 15-foot shot -- he never hesitated to shoot (and drilled it). For the rest of his career, he never passed up any open mid-range shot, unless he spotted a teammate with a better one.

Later in Stockton's career, you could count on him to put the team on his back and carry them through the last five minutes of a close game. Mitchell shows that same determination as a rookie.
