I doubt anyone actually thinks Hayward's our savior. I think the feeling is that he can't possibly be THAT much worse than Bell and might possibly be better. Bell is a spot shooter who can't create or rebound, Hayward has a much more varied offensive repertoire and can create and rebound. While perhaps not the spot 3 point shooter Bell is, he shows potential in this area. Bell is supposed to be a defensive stopper, but whose skills in this area have evidently declined as well. Perhaps the defensive drop-off to Hayward is not so large after all. Hayward is potentially a part of the longer-term Jazz core. Bell is a short-term 'fix.' Finally, the Jazz currently suck, or more precisely, the first unit sucks. It lacks rhythm, chemistry, firepower, and energy, serving up a consistent diet of first quarter shellackings, forcing the second unit to cover its ***, which, although it managed to do so early in the season, has proven less capable of doing lately.
In short a chance appears to be needed. Bell is underperforming. Why not give Hayward a shot and see what he can do? Mathews thrived last year after given the starting job and the coaches' confidence. Maybe Hayward will do the same.
Hayward is not THE answer, but he can possibly be part of of the answer. One thing is for sure, Bell IS NOT the answer.
