Jazz vs. Grizzlies game thread (8:00 pm MTN)

Memphis is in a tough spot. They would like to lose more because their draft pick is going to Boston unless it is a top 6 pick.

But they also would like the Jazz to lose because Jazz pick is owed to Memphis and is only protected 1-7 and 15-30.

How in the world Danny Ainge keeps getting extra lottery picks is inexplicable.
And how the jazz keep giving away draft picks for short term rentals is infuriating.

I don't understand why people think Niang is so bad. I've seen a lot worse. I'd be willing to wager he has a better +/- than Green. Not to say he's better but you can't fault his effort, which is Green's problem -- he disappears for stretches of games.

Niang does have a better plus/minus. Niang is a -53 while Green is -82. Both individually are a massive problem. Together it's even worse. The reason I single out Niang and that I say that I want the Jazz to play Brantley over Niang is because the Jazz are notoriously slow making rotation changes. I know they aren't going to sit a veteran like Jeff that they just signed and planned on being a key bench piece. So it has to be Niang they sit. Hopefully Brantley, if EVER given the chance, kills the opportunity. Then he might start stealing Greens minutes.

Brantley emerging would be a big storyline. Green needs someone to push him and the Jazz need something actually resembling a playmaking big man. There are a ton of minutes waiting to be taken at those positions.

Memphis is tanking right. They take a ton of shots from 2pt (ranks 4th in the league) but convert at a low percentage (ranked 22), and take very few foul shots (rank 28).
Grizzlies rank 26th in offensive rating, and 21 in defense rating.

Jazz have slipped to 24th in offensive rating, and 11th in defense rating.

This is the third meeting for these teams this season. Jazz went into the first meeting at 8-3 and lost. Since then Jazz are 4-7.

Memphis ' last win was Dec 1st in Minnysotta. Jae Crowder put up 12pts/10reb. Grayson was a +18 and shot 3-6 3pts with 5 rebs.

it should be a 40 point win as the Grizzlies have no one and exums last game with jazz, trade has to happen

Niang is -53 and Green -82 for the season, but Niang has only played 172 minutes to Green's 417. On a per-36 basis, Niang is -11 and Green is a -7.

EDIT: Everyone's +/- per 36 is... interesting

Bogey +4
Royce +3
Rudy +2
Conley +2
Mitchell +1
Mudiay +0
Ingles -2
Bradley -4
Green -7
Exum -8
Davis -8
Niang -11

Based on this, who should be backing up Rudy?

I don't know. I've been listening to these guys and they seem pretty humble and honest about what's going on. They understand what the problems are but they are having a hard time trying to get them fixed. Things aren't going their way and they let it impact every other aspect of the game. It also doesn't help that they have no time to practice. They just got two whole practice days. I feel good about tonight and possibly getting on a little roll.

Utah or Memphis? Too many pronouns here.

I'm hoping Brantley can do it. I know this is getting comedic at this point. Bradley is glued to the floor and Davis is a beanpole that provides almost nothing besides rim-protection and rebounding.

Niang is actively targeted on defense and doesn't have the ability to do jack **** about it. He doesn't bring anything to the table besides tenure and when his shot is occasionally on. Niang is worthless and is lucky to be in the league.

He can make open threes, 41% last season and 39% this season.

I don’t think you can trade consecutive first round picks. Don’t we have our pick this year and Memphis has it the next year (when high school players are eligible)?

Yer right. The nba put that rule in place to protect teams from doing stupid things. But jazz really wanted to be stupid so they drafted Bazely then he was traded. So...

2020 first round draft pick to Memphis

Utah's 1st round pick to Memphis protected for selections 1-7 and 15-30 in 2020, 1-7 and 15-30 in 2021, 1-6 in 2022, 1-3 in 2023 and 1 in 2024; if Utah has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Memphis by 2024, then Utah will instead convey its 2025 2nd round pick and 2026 2nd round pick to Memphis [Memphis-Utah, 7/6/2019]

Davis. He's a better overall player than Bradley is right now. The reason that Davis has a worse +/- than Bradley at the moment is because our bench as a whole is so terrible offensively and Davis isn't a scorer. I like what Bradley has shown so far this season though. Longterm it would be nice if he could take the job.
