What's new

Jody G is a fool

I like Jody. He works hard, is always breaking news, and his attempts at humor aren't overly obnoxious--sometimes he hits and it's hilarious.

Relaxe. He's a beat writer, not a member of basketball operations.

That's the problem, his jokes only hits about 20% of the time.

He is breaking good news and I know he works hard, but having to wade through tweets after tweets of his "attempts" (which mostly are cringe worthy), can be laborious and hard work.

Jody if you're reading this: I appreciate your hard work bro, you're doing a good job, but if you could keep Jazz Content vs Joke attempts to a 80/20 split it would be really really GREAT.

haha I would imagine it'd be a breeze after reading through this board every day.

No one said Jody doesn't work hard, at least I didn't, but the main issue I had was he made up his own story after twisting Hayward's quotes. I find that deplorable. And if Jody really does read this board, I hope he realizes many Jazz fans can see through his ******** stories and don't appreciate them whatsoever.

WTF are you talking about?

I listened to the Hayward interview today where he used the word bully. Jody G takes it out of context to create some BS narrative he wants https://www.deseretnews.com/article...y-with-an-edge-this-season-for-Utah-Jazz.html

“It has been good. I’m more on balance and just stronger,” Hayward said about his offseason workouts, which improved his body composition. “I’m able to kind of just bully some people a little bit more than I was able to.”

How was that taken out of context? I don't have a problem with the article, it seems just fine.

Being able to bully someone on the court a little bit more than he used to just means he can uses his strength more, and not be the one being pushed around. He never mentioned his style of play is now like this nasty ***-kicker a la Ron Artest. It was just a passing comment on how his added strength has helped so far.

He didn't describe himself as a Bully as the article states - nor should D-Will/Delonte/etc. beware of him roughing them up. That's not his game, and he most certainly didn't assert that in those quotes.

I respect the work and time Jody puts in, but as a die hard Jazz fan who has been begging Hayward to play nastier and with a mean streak I lit up when I saw the headline because I figured maybe he himself articulated "I need to be more of a bully, meaner, etc." and that's where the story came from. My disappointment came from the fact that the quote I heard during the interview sound was the source of the story. It's a ridiculous stretch.

Obviously Jody has plenty of fans on here, and rightfully so, who are defending him but you can't deny Jody made up the premise for the story.

Regardless, I am foaming at the mouth for the season to begin and have much higher expectations for this squad than any rational/sane basketball fan because I think Hayward could be in line for an All-Star caliber career if he continues to make strides towards consistency and being more agressive and an ******* with the opponents on the court.

I dunno about you but if I want my comedy fix I watch something funny on tv.

What I want from my sport writer is professional reporting, not someone who uses his position to act like an *** on twitter.
Bill Simmons is my favorite writer and he is funny.

I think it's ok to be funny in print as well as on tv

Hayward,

1) got married,
2) became unimaginably "financially secure",
3) got rejected by Team USA,
4) and bulked up such that he is "able to kind of just bully some people a little bit more than I was able to.”

I have a feeling Hayward and this Jazz season is going to kind of be somewhat good, just a little bit.

I love Simmons, but I read him for the entertainment, not for quality reporting and insight. I think people criticize Simmons for the same reason people are criticizing Jody on here.

You should read Simmons book...... it had really good quality insight, AND humor.

It really is ok to have both

4) and bulked up such that he is "able to kind of just bully some people a little bit more than I was able to.”

5) replaced the debilitating pressure of playing in a quasi-contract year with the potentially debilitating pressure of having to deliver on the expectations that come with signing a maximum contract.

I can sort of not really wait all that much for the season to kind of get going eventually, whenever.

Hey. This is Jody Genessy here (@DJJazzyJody on Twitter).

First off, thanks to those of you who've said some cool things about me. It's much appreciated.

To answer your question: Yes, I read this message board on occasion. I also swing by SLCDunk, Salt City Hoops, Purple & Blues, even the Salt Lake Tribune, from time to time. It's good to try to keep up with what people, fans included, are saying about the Jazz. (Or in this case about me.)

I get that not everybody loves my sense of humor and certainly not every joke I throw out there. Heck, even I wonder what I was thinking after clicking "post" sometimes. I do, however, take exception to Young Blood's assertion that only 20% of my jokes are funny (or at least not cringe-worthy). I'm at least 25% funny.

Since I started writing about sports at the D-News (perhaps before some of you were born), I've taken the approach that stories should be as interesting as they are informative. So, that's my approach. I try to entertain and inform. Sometimes players/coaches/others provide the fun content. Sometimes I try to. And when it's not appropriate, I just stick with the facts and/or story.

It can be a tricky balance.

I guess this led to the original reason for this post. I found Hayward's "bully" comment to be a great insight even though he did couch it with some "kind of" syntax. I wanted to do a story on Hayward and explore the pros/cons of his offseason weight gain, and thought this would be an interesting angle to use because most people don't equate the word "bully" with Hayward.

Just look at the definition of bully:

"use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants."
synonyms: persecute, oppress, tyrannize, browbeat, harass, torment, intimidate, strong-arm, dominate

So, maybe his quote wasn't as mean as you wanted it to be. However, combined with him saying that word, Burks openly admitting Hayward is stronger and Snyder talking about how he wants him to be aggressive and efficient, I just don't see how I misled anybody. Playing like a bully is playing with an edge. If Hayward is able to do that (and shoot better), he could really turn out to be quite the player.

Anyway, this corny-joke-telling fool has babbled long enough. Feel free to drop by Twitter or email me at jody@deseretnews.com if you have any other comments/criticisms/compliments/comps at restaurants for me.

Jody

P.S. HighlandHomie, I was the one who asked Hayward if his video-game playing time had decreased, leading to his fun response that all the media used. I was keeping it for this story.

Is this a joke? If so I would say it increases Jody's humor to post ratio well above the 20% mark.

Ha ha.
