What's new

Jody G is a fool

“It has been good. I’m more on balance and just stronger,” Hayward said about his offseason workouts, which improved his body composition. “I’m able to kind of just bully some people a little bit more than I was able to.”

How was that taken out of context? I don't have a problem with the article, it seems just fine.
I agree. I read the article and actually smiled. Alec Burks also seems to be having fun with Hayward using the "bully" term. IIRC, we've had more than one thread that degenerated into a discussion of Hayward's lack of toughness. "Wet Willygate" was one of the reasons many felt he shouldn't be given a big contract; because he didn't defend his honor and start a fight with Delonte. Now he uses the term "bully" and Jody spends most of the article talking about Hayward bulking up, how Snyder wants him to be more aggressive, etc.

Jody Genessey, IMO, is a great writer. I don't follow twitter, so maybe he tries to get too cute with his tweets. But I find he almost always writes decent articles.

Rough crowd. Lesson learned: Don't respond to threads at Jazzfanz.

Carry on with your bashing ...

There is nothing wrong with using the word bully for some analogy to emphasize a player getting a lot stronger who also was renown for showing up weak and the nice kid in town. I have no problem with Gordie kicking the guy's ace next time he tries to give wet willy to him. Take that wet finger... and do some other stuff with it that will be unable to be shown in here as gif since this is a nice family site.

Is this real? Wait forty minutes and two posts to reply what I quoted above? One post joking about the 20% thing, and one post an inside joke that unless you're well versed in Jazzfanz lore, you wouldn't get at all. If that's a tough crowd, then don't EVER get a job in Philly, New York or any other sports hub that isn't in Utah.

In any case, I liked Bryan T. Smith because I actually got, you know, Jazz news from a Jazz beat writer. We got pretty much nothing from Oram. How he got a job as a beat writer for the Lakers is beyond me, based solely on how I perused his material. Falk is better, but there's a ton more information coming from Genessy, and the tribune seems to have split beat duties with Tony Jones, which is annoying for how I use Twitter, so I will likely read the D-News' Jazz beat writer more.

That's a fair criticism. Guess I was being a bit thin-skinned.

WTF are you talking about?

Yeah man! The ****?!?

Hey. This is Jody Genessy here (@DJJazzyJody on Twitter).

First off, thanks to those of you who've said some cool things about me. It's much appreciated.

To answer your question: Yes, I read this message board on occasion. I also swing by SLCDunk, Salt City Hoops, Purple & Blues, even the Salt Lake Tribune, from time to time. It's good to try to keep up with what people, fans included, are saying about the Jazz. (Or in this case about me.)

I get that not everybody loves my sense of humor and certainly not every joke I throw out there. Heck, even I wonder what I was thinking after clicking "post" sometimes. I do, however, take exception to Young Blood's assertion that only 20% of my jokes are funny (or at least not cringe-worthy). I'm at least 25% funny.

Since I started writing about sports at the D-News (perhaps before some of you were born), I've taken the approach that stories should be as interesting as they are informative. So, that's my approach. I try to entertain and inform. Sometimes players/coaches/others provide the fun content. Sometimes I try to. And when it's not appropriate, I just stick with the facts and/or story.

It can be a tricky balance.

I guess this led to the original reason for this post. I found Hayward's "bully" comment to be a great insight even though he did couch it with some "kind of" syntax. I wanted to do a story on Hayward and explore the pros/cons of his offseason weight gain, and thought this would be an interesting angle to use because most people don't equate the word "bully" with Hayward.

Just look at the definition of bully:

"use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants."
synonyms: persecute, oppress, tyrannize, browbeat, harass, torment, intimidate, strong-arm, dominate

So, maybe his quote wasn't as mean as you wanted it to be. However, combined with him saying that word, Burks openly admitting Hayward is stronger and Snyder talking about how he wants him to be aggressive and efficient, I just don't see how I misled anybody. Playing like a bully is playing with an edge. If Hayward is able to do that (and shoot better), he could really turn out to be quite the player.

Anyway, this corny-joke-telling fool has babbled long enough. Feel free to drop by Twitter or email me at jody@deseretnews.com if you have any other comments/criticisms/compliments/comps at restaurants for me.

Jody

P.S. HighlandHomie, I was the one who asked Hayward if his video-game playing time had decreased, leading to his fun response that all the media used. I was keeping it for this story.

Thanks for dropping by, Jody. Thought your profile on Favors last year was a great piece of journalism, and as I mentioned earlier, appreciate all of the hard work you put in to keeping Jazz fans informed.

We've seen this rerun before. Did you forget that Hayward "yelled" at another player in training camp last year?

He's a bully!

jody is my favorite jazz twitter feed to follow. and i love seeing him reporting at games. he's a funny guy.

just checked and jody is the only jazz twitter feed i follow, besides the official jazz account of course

SUFFICIENCY

Being able to bully someone on the court a little bit more than he used to just means he can uses his strength more, and not be the one being pushed around.

Yes, agreed.

He never mentioned his style of play is now like this nasty ***-kicker a la Ron Artest.

I didn't see where in the article Genessy claimed it was.

He didn't describe himself as a Bully as the article states - nor should D-Will/Delonte/etc. beware of him roughing them up. That's not his game, and he most certainly didn't assert that in those quotes.

Again, I didn't get that out of the article at all. All I saw the article talking about was his improved strength and weight, and the ability to not be the one pushed around. Just like you said.

Perhaps you can post some specific quotes that caused you to feel Genessy was misrepresenting things. Because I'm just not seeing it.

Jody is a funny dude. I appreciate the way he covers the team. He has a personality and seems like a genuine guy.

People are too tough on Jody and Locke. Both do good work... don't take everything so seriously and you'll have a more enjoyable life.

Agreed. There's a fool here, but it's not Genessy.

DJJazzyJody is rad. And his name is cool.

Jody, the only ones on this board complaining about your writing style are viewed as goof balls anyways. Most of us like that we have guys like you to report the stuff we do get. You should post here more often. It would certainly make me read more articles from local guys. Most of us kind of forget that the local stuff gets published, what with ESPN and all the blogs and stuff. Maybe when you write especially cool articles, start a thread about them in jazz forum, and we can all enjoy them/throw unwanted criticism your way.

I enjoy your writing. You have a realness about it that makes it easier to read, like the story came from a friend or something instead of just a writer.

Well, again, I've got no problem with your writing whatsoever - I do think it is top notch and like you said most of the time it is interesting as well as informative. I get that anyone can write an informative piece, but to make it interesting as well is not so easy. So again, I do think you're doing a great job there in terms of the articles that you write.

It's really the twitter account that I have a bit of a problem with. And yes I do think it is an important part of what you do, at times Twitter is really your first point contact with the public. I brought up that joke about the Jazz making the playoffs in 2041 - to me that's one of the more cringe-worthy jokes. I really don't mind some 'well considered jokes' (which by the way Bill Simmons does very well - you'll notice how he keep his joke-based tweets to a minimum), but tweeting out a joke just for the sake of tweeting I don't find particularly interesting. To me it's gotten so bad that I sometimes wonder whether a tweet is an actual piece of info or just a joke, and when that line is blurred I don't think that's a good thing for the general public, just for the sake of being 'interesting' or 'funny'.

Like I said you're doing a great job but this is just my 2 cents. This is a Rep comment I got last night, so I don't think I am alone in my view on this:

Jody sucks. Seems like a nice guy, but his jokes suck and he tweets out more of those than anything substantive about the Jazz.

You are a cool dude Id love to have a beer with. You probably dont drink beer. Ill follow you on twitter now.
