Keeping Lauri seems increasingly pointless

Seeing as we’re clearly gunning for top 5 in 2026, it may be worth keeping him in the event we need to wheel and deal during draft season and include him in a trade package then.

As we just saw you never know who’s going to be picking 1-3.

You can't trade for star picks in the NBA unless the team with the star pick dislikes the player.

Teams were willing to offer the Spurs everything for #2 and they laughed people off.

You’re painting with too broad of a brush here. Each year is different. Big drop off from Harper at #2 to the others who went behind him.

Who’s to say the same gap exists from, say, 3 to 5 next year?

Point being, if a good team is picking high, and wants to win now, might they part with a higher pick to move down a few slots + snag Lauri?

I don’t know, but I’d say it’s possible.

I mean, if we're trading up, it's to trade up into that star player tier so we'll be in the same situation again.

Markkanen's gonna be in the final year of his contract (and 31) before the Jazz are even thinking about being competitive - if ever. Of course you trade him. As they should have traded him many times already. What on earth does the Jazz do with him?

And thinking he's somehow going to become super-valuable playing lights out until the trade deadline... 1) the Jazz are going to be truly awful next season, 2) with all of the young guys looking out for #1. If anything, it's more probable Markkanen would be less valuable on this team.

My general feeling is that Lauri’s value is quite down and so the Jazz are entering a rehab-value-while-losing period leading up to the deadline.

Should’ve just traded him last offseason and taken the bird in hand. Danny hates losing the trade, and any trade last year would’ve felt like a loss - until the other team was forced to extend him and bankroll all the risk.

The good news is that Lauri is still on the right side of thirty and can be a contributor once the young guys get their legs under them - if the Jazz can’t find a deal they like in the meantime.

I sure hope he didn’t feel like getting ~2 picks, 2 swaps, Kuminga, and Moody is LOSING a trade. I think it’s more the case that if he doesn’t embarrass the other team then it’s not worth it which is a really stupid way to go about business and was a criticism of his methodology before he was even here.

I would LAUGH my *** off if nobody wants him because the team is tanking and then he launches back into All-Star mode next year when the team pivots to trying to win again. Like, everyone just misses the boat because the Jazz were tanking and suppressing his value. . . but his game is actually solid when the team is trying to win.

IF that actually was the deal - he should’ve taken it. For sure. It’s what I eventually came around to last year and why I think they should have traded him. Oh well. We’ll never truly know.
