Prefer his guitar playing to his songs if that makes any sense. He is super talented though.

There was a Nashville punk band named Diarrhea Planet who he had open one of his shows. The have 4 guitarists plus a bassist, but they felt they needed more guitarists, so they called Isbell, his guitarist, and Sturgill Simpson up on stage to jam with them.
