I've had PM's with a couple mods and explained my involvement (for a true lack of better words). It's really simple, if you would rather not read my posts, no matter your reason, don't.

The loss of the 2004–05 season meant that there were no results on which to base the order of the 2005 entry draft. The league settled on a lottery system in which all teams had a weighted chance at the first pick, expected to be Sidney Crosby. The lottery was tilted so teams with fewer playoff appearances over the last three seasons and fewer number one overall picks over the last four seasons had a better chance of landing higher picks. The complete order was determined by the lottery, and the 2005 draft was conducted in a "snake" style, meaning in even rounds, the draft order was reversed. This system was an attempt to compromise between those who felt all teams should have had an equal chance at the first pick and those who felt only the weaker teams should have been in the running.

One idea I've come up with is have a sliding lottery. Many ways to determine initial order, regular season only. Playoff/non-playoff teams, Playoff ladder, etc. But once the teams are designated 1-30, have a weighted lottery of ten slots. Teams 1-10 have a weighted chance for the number 1 pick. Team 1 would have the highest chance, say 15-20%, and team 10 would have a 1% chance.

Add team 11 for the second pick. Add team 12 for the third pick. If you want cut the non-playoff team picks at fourteen. I personally wouldn't and would include first round losers at the eleventh pick. Keep going with the sliding lottery, adjusting however you want, until all picks have been designated.
 
^^ Not a bad thought. I'd love to come up with the math model used to determine the draft order .. purely as a challenge (not to give us an advantage or anything).
 
One of the local radio stations has some dude on whose company simulates each game like 10,000 times. Have this guy do the whole season and use his results of the 2011-2012 season to determine the draft order.

I remember hearing this, but I thought it was a lot more than 10,000 times. Something more like 50,000 times.
