What's new

Looking for a new team

my kids just don't like watching sports. i'd love it if they'd watch sports with me though. even my son who is a pretty good basketball player isn't really a sports fan. he'll watch with me on occasion just to hang out with dad and he also knows quite about what's going on because he plays sports video games all the time, but i'll never catch him watching a game alone, any sport - really just doesn't care.

This is where the sporting world is going to get pulverized coming up. They are used to baby boomers sitting in front of the tv for 4 hours to watch a 60 minute game. They are used to 2 mins of action followed by 5 mins of commercials with a 20 minute commercial halftime in the middle.

Why would anyone watch that? What a waste of time. For what? So Gordon Hayward can make 30 million a year? And the Miller's can grow their net worth to over a billion dollars?

Screw that. Then, toss in that unless you are Boston or LA or have Jordan or LeBron, you aren't winning a title? In the NFL, you have to have Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger or Rogers to have a shot to win it all?

The younger people are smarter than we are. ESPN is already cutting back on commercials. You will see revenue drop and then salaries will follow.

That last part is simply not true at all.

Or it is completely true:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...-commercials-other-changes-to-speed-up-games/

https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...26/espn-abc-less-commercials-college-football

Take a step back and think about it. Think about how much time you spend watching sports. How often has a season ended and you've been elated? How many games end and you are pissed off and can't sleep?

Now, why would you do that, when you can watch Netflix or Prime or whatever and the guy/team you root for wins at the end? And instead of 3-4 hours, you only spent 1.5? And with no commercials?

What we do to watch sports is asinine if you think about it.

Like I said, the millenials are smarter than the boomers. TV/sports will have to catch up or get left behind.

The word fan derives from the word fanatic.

Fanatic comes from the word fanaticus in Latin which refers to Temple loonies.

And fanaticus derived from the word fanum in Latin which basically means Temple.

And I have told you these things for no reason.

You want a generation that is dumb as ****? Look at the baby boomers. More money, more opportunity, more everything than anyone has ever had before. What did they accomplish?

Bankrupt social security, lots of credit card debt, elected Trump, no retirement, big homes they live in in their 50's that they don't own and never will, reverse mortgages, Reagan and his massive government deficit spending.

That's dumb as ****. Remember my post. When you are in your 60's, your generation will be remembered as the greatest since the "greatest generation". You guys will save the world.

I never said I wanted a dumb as **** generation coming up. I simply stated that the generation coming up is dumb as ****. I can only hope that we can buck the trend and turn things around for our own good of course.

I've been bored with the NBA for a long time now(outside the Jazz obviously). I'm trying to transition what I do with European soccer to the NBA and really trying to learn the game and understand what individual teams are trying to accomplish in terms of tactics. It's given the games a new dimension and actually made me watch other teams beside the Jazz. Recommended.

Now there's a sport/leagues that puts the NBA's lack of parity to shame.

This is how I am with European soccer. It's a great joy and relief from being a tortured Jazz fan. I have no rooting interest except in certain underdog situations. I just enjoy looking up formations/tactics and dissecting what I see. EPL, La Liga, Budesliga, Serie A all morning on Saturday and Sunday is basically the highlight of my weekends nowadays and I absolutely love it.

Interesting. I transitioned away from club soccer completely because of the total lack of parity in the sport. It's annoying seeing smaller clubs nurture the growth of a young starlet, before seeing the likes of Bayern or Madrid or whoever just swooping in with a crazy contract. See what Bayern has constantly done to Borussia. I played soccer my entire life, and I slowly fell in love with basketball when I was 15 or so. I do like your point about formations. And I've been sad about missing Zidane's work with Madrid because Zidane is my favourite player of all-time (I was a massive Les Blues fan, before Albania actually started qualifying for these tournaments).

International soccer though..? Now there is a ****ing sport. Fascinating, dramatic, high-stakes, I put it above the Olympics easily. Zero commercials except for half-time, which is so underrated especially in light of the amount of commercials in North American sports.

I think what I love with basketball though is the storylines of the players. I don't think there's a single other sport where there's as many "heroes" that can single-handedly not only sway games, but have such a powerful brand that they impose on the game in their own way. Steph with his crazy shots, Klay with his "i'm gonna murder y'all" hot streaks, Lebron being Lebron, Melo with his funny isos, James Harden with his interesting game. It's just fun. The NBA has the best athlete storylines in my opinion. It's the best social media sport, a game tailor made for vines.

Haha...

So when we come to Jazzfanz, we actually come to the Jazz Temple?!?!

good question. when i was first getting into baseball at about age 9, the orioles had a rookie by the name of Cal Ripken. i decided he was a bad *** and started rooting for him and the O's. no connection to the city of Baltimore. i've been to one game in Baltimore in my life. they've been tough to root for over the years, but i'm stuck.

I loved watching Cal Ripken too. One of my favourite players.
