Why would Amazon buy the rights to material that has already been so well put to film? I don't understand that. At all. Why would you not buy the rights to material that is still untapped?

Tolkien estate is extremely combative and protective. My guess is they simply wouldn't budge regardless of the $ that were tossed at them. I can't believe they still sold it at $250M, but when you're Jeff Bezos and you intend to get something done no matter what, that's like going out to Texas Roadhouse for an evening.
